Morning People's Been meaning to post this up for ages now, but just kept getting side tracked by the cars all the time. After seeing another one of these at Race The story of this little beast starts waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy back when I was about 4 years old. My Dad used to really be into boats but decided to give up the hobby when my sister was born thus it was stuck in the very same garage my Midget is in now, then in about 1985 Dad decided the Kids needed some petrol fun. After hunting around he found Dale Karts of Birmingham, so decided to call them. After a few moments he found out the owner was into Boats and offered a trade (with some cash going my dads way), this offer was snapped up and this was delivered. I remember the day it arrived as it was blisteringly hot, my dad decided to set the governer on it (I was only 4 remember, sister being 9) by proping the back up on bricks, then adjusting the screw however the bricks fell away and Bang I hit the wall LOL Fun all the way. We were on the thing in all conditions, and with instruction from Dad he had us driving in between cones, showing us how to Power slide and get the thing out of a spin. Little did he know, the petrol was in my veins LOL. The Kart was used constantly up until I was about 15 when it was just put in the garage and left for years. However you can guess how cool and how many people wanted to come over to my place when I was a kid lol. So fast forward a good few years, probably around 2005 we decided to try and get it going again but it seems the carb was proper crudded up and the jets totally Fubard so it was again just left in the garage, then the a container untill.................... Last weekend when (in a hungover state) I decided I wanna tazz on the garden in it again, plus My sister now has a 4 year old who would love it. So here we are int he light for the first time in years. The Kart is powered by a Apera HBL35 3HP motor same as some Lawn mowers, its a very very simple design and in fact would be easy to strap a larger motor to!! (One day) . Currently I have ordered a new carb which should see it back on the lawn tearing it up. Grime from years of abuse After a quick clean up and carb removal. Now the carb is stripped and a new one on order, I decided it must have a permanent spot in the "Petrol Heads hideout" (My garage). Come back soon for more updates, Cheers

That looks amazing! What a great go kart and with a great history as well! The best my Dad did was a plank with some pram wheels and an old drawer for the seat with the back removed!
Nice one, I am sure that there will be years more fun in that!

ooo, good story I've got plans for a go-kart I've had doodled for a while using a 175cc Lambretta engine - which would be fairly rapid. How fast do you get from 3hp? I've seen the 5.5hp engines on eGay for about a ton and did wonder how they might fair speed-wise

Erm to a kid it was lightning. LOL
I remember no body being able to run faster than it from a standing start even with a grown adult driving. I will let you know.

Well it seems getting a Carb for this is a pain. Dellorto who produced the original seem to of changed the design, so I think I may just fit a larger carb and fabricate a reducing inlet to fit. Hummmmm SU? lol HAve just found this Which seems to be about the same but not made by dellorto, I will get it if it don't fit then a Bigger carb is being slapped on.

the only real problem with fitting a different carb is tying in the govenor or you could ditch the carb and go injection i think its on you tube there is a clip of someone who fitted home made injection (megasquirt i believe) to a lawnmower engine and a turbo as well ttfn glenn

HAHAHAHA its funny you mention Turbo, Me and Mi16Paul were on about turboing the little curse word.
Comparing the original carb to the photo's I have been provided of that one, it seems everything is the same, Throttle linkage, Choke, inlet size so I am guessing thats a remanufactured Dellorto for the Tecumseh engine (which mine is).
The only govenor I can see is a threaded bar which stops the Gas pedal from going all the way down LOL.
If that thing just mounts up I can fabricate the rest to fit.

the govenors i have had dealings with are a flap next to the cooling fan/flywheel connected to a second throtle butterfly in the carb if you want to go really REALLY silly (absolutely ga ga in fact) google briggs and stratton tuning you will not believe the things people do to get a fraction of a horse more from a kart even b&s have a racing department they do a short motor called blockzilla with heavy castings to allow running methanol (top fuel kart anyone) so turbo injected isnt that wild ps how about a small motorcycle carb? ttfn glenn

Update time: Well the carb turned up yesterday and was fitted last night IT RUNS!!!!!!! a bit rough but it runs. I don't think this carb can give the engine enough fuel, you basically need the choke half way out to make it run better, which is fine. On the first run I decided to give it a go down the drive, but like a proper dumb-ass I did not check the brakes LOL. Good job the bottom garden had not been cut because with the brakes not working and the throttle stuck wide open it was a bit of a pant marking affair. With the Brakes semi working and the throttle linkage now sorted, we were ready to roll (of course no petrol action goes on alone around my yard, with PaulMi16 and Alex turning up to be in on the action). My god it flys on concrete, and not too bad on grass (nice bit of drifting by Paul). The issues I am finding now are the adjustment screws for the carb don't hold so after a 10-15 min run it needs felting (some locktight shoudl fix this). Also I feel the need for more power, this engine motored me up the Side garden section which has a good incline, but I want more LOL. Queue these: LOL the original engine is 3HP this is 8HP, the brakes need addressing first me thinks but that engine should make it more than fly hahahahahha. I have got Alex on the job of sorting the brakes, at the moment it uses a single cable fed drum brake near the sproket. Alex reckons he can adapt a Motorcycle caliper to the main axle LOL. In the mean time I am getting the parts for this monster engine. Pics of our antics to follow.

I have a small cable operated disk brake from a mini-moto if you want it for this project, will be ages before I get round to using it!

Some ride-on mowers have a disk brake mounted on the rear axle, a very simple rod-operated affair.

Bad to worse @ the moment with this thing.
Seems the years of abuse and then neglect in the garage have taken a toll on the chain which snapped LOL. It seemed to slap about too much so on closer inspection I could see the links were about knackered as they were stretched, we tried raising the engine to take up some slack but it was just too much.
So a new chain is on order, the engine I ahve goe for is a 6.7HP, which has been de-govened and the oil alert has been removed. I have also bought a new smaller sprocket, the one that is currently on the car is about as big as the wheel. Its fine for this motor as it need the torque but the new one will have ample power to cope.
The new engine puts out around 250cc so thats should be a laugh.
As for the brakes, my old mini moto (when I say old it actually new being only used once) will give up its disc brake affair, however I think with the new motor it may not be powerful enough.

This thing is going to be insane when you get the new engine! ;D Definately needs the brakes doing though, my hands still recovering from the last emergency stop lol. Ill pop round some time on saturday and fit that mini moto brake if thats what youre going to use.

New chain arrived, so promptly fitted and ragged around the garden.
Even with this power and the constant tinkering its insane, as you use the tarmac path the to the right of our garden to get the speed up (runs the full length), nip in between a conifer than blat around the garden and try to power slide LOL.
Video soon to be added.

Well Sunday was amazing so as the family were over I decided to show them what I had recommisioned.
A nice vid to show you even with its 3HP motor it does go some.
Not bad for a 20 odd year old engine thats beeing cained all its life.

Afternoon Best I update this as the kart changed recently. Since I last updated the thread the Kart was not used much was stored under the Midget, this was until 2 weeks ago when a few mates came over. Being a group of blokes together we decided to see who could smash my lap time of the garden. The time stood at 42.85 Seconds for a full lap of the designated course. So the Kart was rolled out, cleaned, fuelled up and I did the first run. I always tend to get the same time knowing exactly where to lift off etc. Few of the other guys had their go (none of which got close to the time). Then it was this guys turn: He looks donkey-kong from mario kart LOL. Anyway please bear in mind he's 20stone and that engine is 3.5hp and its had a hard life. Well he started off well and was actually on target to match my time until a very large bang could be heard................Yep he blew up the engine HAHAHAHAH. See our faces as we realise the little motor died on us (I'm the bald one, my face says it all) That was the fun over for about an hour, when someone said why don't we use this: Brand spanking new generator A friend there deciding that the driving position is not quite right. Strip down (you can see where this is going) See not even dirty The beast, well kinda. Its a 5.5hp motor and pratically the same (apart from branding) to my Pro karting mates. Some choice mods made For those who don't know, all these types of engine use the same mounting platform so fitting was easy. However the throttle/Carb opened in the opposite direction so some mods were made (Removing the brake was one PMSL) Keeps the neighbours happy...............................Actually it don't Arty angle Back side, now I know what your thinking. Originally we intended to use the Generator tank and mount it above the engine. However we did not know how fast this would be over the old engine, so a frame was welded using the generators frame and this was used to mount the original tank. First test run............................and my god its alot faster, its now able to spin up the rear wheels and will drift. Still no brakes. Current fastest time is now 29.87 seconds Video being up loaded. I plan on taking it to the gathering providing I can shoehorn it into the Capri and that my Mini moto brakes fit.
