melted and detonation? what you do? not melted, just smashed. if you look closely at the picture of the head, you might notice that the exhaust valves are missing, so yeah, you get the picture. i think i managed to get the cam chain on one tooth out or something, though I'm not entirely sure. but its definitely the valves it was running really well for about 30 miles or so, but when i took it to college on monday, got about 5 miles out of town, and it made horrible crunchy noised and then i lost all drive. it was running rich, and nothing was really blocking the air flow. so i can see overheating being a problem.. meh its yet another annoyance, so I'm now after a yam engine. with wiring loom would be nice. but seeing as money is a MAJOR issue (as in, not having any) i doubt its gonna be back on the road any time soon.... curse word. -Liam

Gutted. Don't trust crappy engines like that fine example again! Stick with something you know works with a 125. You'll be pushing a 125 to the limits all the time, so it's got to be good. Did you take the head apart then before the incedent? did you have the valves out?

Shame about that, it's a wicked bike. The best excuse to fit a really quality engine in there though! Good luck with it

ah well, poop happens, have an xr400 in the shed right now, worn cam, three worn rockers, one SNAPPED rocker, mushroomed valve heads and it still ran! sounded like a bag of spanners but still even the most reliable engine will be killed by a lack of oil (guy though "well since it only has 1500 miles on the clock it just needs the valves adjusted"....)
any way i vote you find a honda cb125 twin, nice sounding, unwanted and dead reliable, the 250cc version is exactly the same just a little taller to accommodate the extra stroke.

Did you take the head apart then before the incedent? did you have the valves out? trust me, i wont be! i had the head apart, but the valves stayed in place. all i did while it was apart was to check that they sealed, and that they moved smooth, ensuring the spring could close them well enough. perhaps i should of taken the valves out, for all i know, the stems could of been cracked when i put the head back on. but for one reason or another( i can remember why) i decided i'd leave them be. ah well, poop happens, have an xr400 in the shed right now, worn cam, three worn rockers, one SNAPPED rocker, mushroomed valve heads and it still ran! sounded like a bag of spanners but still even the most reliable engine will be killed by a lack of oil (guy though "well since it only has 1500 miles on the clock it just needs the valves adjusted"....) any way I vote you find a honda cb125 twin, nice sounding, unwanted and dead reliable, the 250cc version is exactly the same just a little taller to accommodate the extra stroke. haha. yeah. I'm sure this would of kept going if it had a fellow piston/cylinder along side it as everything still turned over nicely. your not the only one who votes for one of them! been looking for one for some time, but they, along with rebel twins (same engines pretty much) go for silly money. so unless i meet a nice man who loves the bike, who has a running honda cb / rebel write off or something and is willing to donate it to the cause, I'm not going to be getting one for some time yet :/ cheers for the comments though guys. I'm hoping to have this back on the road for the 18th of june, as theres a biker fest up this way, i went to it last year on the moped and i feel its necessary for me to be there on the bike this time. but weather or not thats going to happen, is a different story..

me and my family decided it was time to stop messing around with these silly Chinese engines, its time to get a decent lump.. so... this turned up on my door step today... a cb 125 tdc superdream lump. a previous owner had rebuilt it, not knowing what they were doing. so there's grease in the oil, there's gasket sealant on the head gasket, and 2 new spark plugs. so, on the shopping list now: -top end gasket set -piston rings (they're shot on number 2) -possibly a coil. but i might have one of them waiting for me.. should be a nice little lump when when done. taa -Liam

haha. you share my enthusiasm then? its going to be slightly tuned: mostly free flow exhaust and running a down jetted 250 carb, so lots of air. maybe in future tune it up a little. but the main thing is to get it running and get me back on the road. i've only got about 9 months worth of cbt left, and i wanna be on the road for the rest of it! cheers -Liam

did a quick search on kiwibikers bucket forum, was thinking there was something about using an fzr250 cdi to give it more advance higher up allowing it to rev out more, couldn't find it did find this nugget: so make sure the tappet lock nuts are tight! Got a mate who (having blown up his main bike repeatedly) is now stuck on his woman's rebel 125, he is moaning about how slow it is (22st fat curse word) so any tips and trick to make it move will be passed on. Then when he blows that one up he can just pay me to put a 250 in

ah cheers mate. will ensure that the lock nuts are tight! i ain't having another engine die if i can help it.. I'm hoping to use the Chinese wiring loom, and there for the CDI on that(and i can get racing CDI's for not alot). if its all the same ignition set up.. standard these engines rev to 13,000rpm! haha. yeah. heard rebels aren't the fastest things around. but i suppose they weren't built for speed..

I'm only daytiming it so it need to be perfect everywhere else. digi speedo went on after the mot, so I'm not entirely sure yet. but my mates went through with one without any problems.. you can get little lamps to bolt onto the handle bars so you can read the display at night. but if there's a speed limit, there's usually street lights, so i can usually see.. its surprisingly accurate too so i think you'll be alright.. just need to set it up properly...

yeah, i know, but extra info cant help for any others reading this who're thinking about doing this as well.. or.. if you decide to make yours a full mot jobbie in future.. I thought you didnt need a speedo for the MOT?? thats the case with 50cc's, but I'm not sure about 125s, because they can do higher speeds, if nothing else, it saves you a speeding ticket..
