surely a good driver doesn't need a shift light I see your point tho...do they have to be SOO big tho? a smaller one, would look sex onto of a Rapid dash.

Ideally, in the shuv I'd have no dash, a rollcage, monster tach mounted on the crossbar of the cage at the top of the bulkhead, speedo beside it, both in front of the wheel.
Minor guages (oil temp, water temp, voltage, fuel et cetera) mounted on the same bar, where the centre console would be.
Then again, if I fit a bike engine, I could mount the entire binnical in a nice carbon fibre sheath...

surely a good driver doesn't need a shift light maybe not, but the same good driver is sure to blow the f*ck out of his engine on a hard run down the strip.having a pretty light should stop this from happening. i think they are that big so they are easy to see.i could see mine out of the corner of my eye, allowing me to concentrate on the other important non engine blowing up instruments.and of course spend more time smirking at the impreza that id just blown away ;D they do make smaller guages to fit into your dash, but why do that when you can have precision american excess bolted on top? ;D

One quick note on older rev counters. Some are designed to run with ballast resistors from the coil and can be a pain to get them to work properely. Mainly ones from 60`s and early 70`s cars. Also if you are getting an old one make sure its a 4 cylinder and not a six or eight (unless its switchable)

penski in da house: Fitting a tach...I have one of these that sooner (or most likely later) will be fitted to the Skoda Slammer, have not figured how to wire it since the Skoda has separate coils for each spark plugg but we'll se about that and man is it coooool.....

I picked up a 52mm Smiths tacho in an autojumble. Does anyone know how to tell if it's -ve or +ve earth? the earth is shared with the lighting circuit so hook up a 12v battery with +ve to the illumination (white or yellow) and the -ve to earth (black) - if this lights it up it'll be standard -ve earth. i think
