I solved the problem with my Avengers performance. The air filter and breather were completely blocked solid so it wouldn't rev, poor thing couldn't breathe.

Vauxhalls aren't really British enough. Plus I don't really like the look of them so much. How are vivas not british enough? OK, GM owned by the end of viva production, (and its not like chrysler didnt own rootes) but it was designed and built in Britain, from British steel to British imperial dimensions and standards, by a British workforce. (perhaps thats why they break down and fall to bits a lot ) cant argue on the looks if you don't like them, but someone post a pic of coggers or V8s firenzas (or Gerry.......) to enlighten the poor boy!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Rootes cars were built very well compared to many of their contemporaries. Many say the Avenger is a better drive than the Escort. I do like that green one! Mechanical mods won't cost any more than equivalent Fords etc. Viva HA and HB are nice too. I've read a few horror stories about Hillmans, especially the Avenger, which is one thing which had put me off them in the past. Seems to be backed up by the fact that there pretty rare as well. Is this just rumour though. It's just that I need this car to be a "daily driver" so it needs to be fairly reliable, although I know that no car of this age will be reliable as a modern car.

I know Rootes wasn't British owned during the time of the Avenger. But at least it is a British brand (Hillman) so I can trick myself into thinking I'm driving something British and get all proud about it ;D To be honest I haven't seen any Vauxhalls that really take my fancy, they all look a bit normal to me. The Avenger does look quite muscley though when lowered, which I like.

Oh, I didn't know that. The US influence is much more obvious on the Vauxhalls though. Either way I prefer the Hillman Avenger's looks to be honest.

Yeah, the performance is much better. The car didn't even want to stay running before hand. With any british car, but the best, most well cared for example you can find. Look for receipts for money spent and work done, make sure it's tip top. As long as you get a good one and look after it properly, you'll be fine

you're looking a reliable, really old classic, that is sporty, fast, and cheap to insure?

I just want something with style and/or character, generally older cars have more of this. I don't mind if it's not the fastest car around a track, but I'd like something that feels pretty quick and if it's fast as well that's a bonus. Cheap to insure is important because I'm a new driver, but most classic cars are cheaper to insure than new cars anyway so it's not so much of a concern, especially when a lot of them are tax exempt. The Imp seems to fit the bill best so far. But the style of the Avenger is really growing on me, so I'm going to have to check them out. I also like the idea of being able to seat 4 people comfortably, and the Avenger has a full size boot as well.

A Marina? I was actually looking at Marinas. But there pretty rare again, I still prefer the look of the Avenger, and most of the Marinas still around are absolute rot boxes from what I've seen.

Yeah, the boot on an Avenger is pretty big, easily fit a dead body in it ;D

lol.
Few other questions for you mate,
how much do they cost. It seems you can get one that need a lot of work for under a grand, and mint ones cost 5-6k. There doesn't seem to be anything in the middle (between 1 and 2k).
How much MPG (roughly) do they do?
And finally how much space is there behind the front headlamps? As I'm thinking of moving them back and then extending the grill across the front of them, like in the photoshops I did on the previous pages.

5-6K is Avenger Tiger money A mint one should cost no more than 2-2.5k, anything more and the guy is taking the mick. I paid £300 for mine as a project, but it was a runner. I think you can get 30-35 mpg from the 1500 and 1600. Smaller engined ones get even more. Not sure you can move the headlights back, but I think you can move the grill forward a bit. I've got a spare grill to cut up if you do get one

Well they are over priced if you've "only" got two grand to spend.
As a 1st car i'm fairly sure you will add your own battle scars to it, so buy the best model of whatever you decide on, but i wouldn't get a minter personally.

Well I'm not planning on getting a mint condition car. But I don't want something that's got rusty sills and arches, and mechanical issues beyond the norm. I don't mind tatty interiors, faded paint, and a few small dents and scratches. But I do mind lots of rust and black smoke pillowing out the back.

Thats fair enough, i'd say the reason the two you posted are so expensive as they look pretty much concours condition hence the prices, or just over priced? I don't actualy know as I don't know much about that particular marque.
