Hello all
David, the site administrator, asked me to pop in and tell you about the new mag, so here I am.
Practical Performance Car launches on April 29. It's not to be confused with so-called "performance tuning" mags like Max Power. Our tagline is, No Speakers, No Bodykits, No Bullplop. I was editor of Practical Classics mag until Christmas last year. Last July we gave a free mag out with the July issue called RPM. It went down a storm but Emap, the company that owns Practical Classics, decided it didn't want to do the mag because it said we might only sell 20,000 copies a month. So tech ed, Kevin Leaper, me and Dave Walker, formerly of CCC magazine, got together to launch it, although we had to pick a different name, Practical Performance Car. We'll be covering cars from the 60s to the 90s, the emphasis being on high performance for realistic money. We'd all love a GT 40 but most of us are never going to have one so we're more interested in Mk I Escorts with Zetecs, anything with a V8 transplant, turbo conversions using bits from scrapyards etc etc. The mag will have a large techincal, hands-on content. We aim to show people how to make their own throttle body injection systems for a fraction of the price of a bought-in system. How to fit rear discs using cheap bits from a scrapyard. How to build a dry-sump set-up without spending a fortune, and much more. We aim to be to the modified classic movement what Practical Classics is to the classic scene generally. In other words, a mag written by petrolheads, for petrolheads. We'll also cover older performance cars that are now in the bargain basement - Porsche 928, Nissan 300ZX etc. If it's quick and affordable, it's in. We're a small company and we're taking on the big publishers who aren't at all happy, so any support will be great. In case you're interested, I run a Mk I Capri which I've fitted with a Ford 302 V8 and Cosworth Siera box. Kev has so many cars I can't even remember them all but he's building a Chevette HSR replica with a full-race 2.3 OHC, a Volvo P1800 with a Rover V8 and a Mk III Capri which he's fitting with a Scorpio twin-cam with a Nissan Silvia turbo. I hope you like the mag. Get in touch if you want to know anything else (willholmania@hotmail.com) Cheers Will Holman.

Will it be coming to Australia? ?? How much will subscriptions be? I couldn't put RPM down. It is right up our street with the Transit etc. I didn't like CCC so much. This promises to be better.

Ah - Austrailian V6 Transit man. Nice to hear from you again. Sadly, there's no way we can afford to distribute PPC in Oz from the start. It costs a fortune and until we're established in the UK we won't be able to do it. However, you can subscribe. Send me an email and I'll send you details. Cheers Will.

I'm afraid it won't. But you can subscribe. Please email me at will ppcmag.co.uk for details. I've just got a Beetle. Fancied something totally different to the V8 Capri. I want to turbocharge it. Do any of you fellas have any experience of this?

Well I haven't... but there are plenty of people in the forums over at www.volkszone.com/VZi that can help, I'm sure!

That's me Will, but the Transit doesn't have a V6, it is a thumpimg great inline 4.2 litre alloy head crossflow. We don't bother with V6 Transits here ;D

The mag sounds good, is it going to be pretty much the same deal as 'Retro' magazine or do you have something different in mind? Oh, and is your Capri still keeping you smiling? I remember the grief you were receiving about it in practical classics! I'm hoping to do something similar myself eventualy. Smiler.

Practical Performance Car will feature some similar cars to Retro Cars but more besides. And we'll have some real in-depth tech features that show readers how to build stuff without spending a fortune. If you saw the RPM supplement that we did with Practical Classics last year you'll get the idea.
The V8 Capri is certainly still making me smile. I'm planning some big upgrades for it soon.

Something that might be nice to include sometime is a list of engines with information such as weight, power output, rough dimensions and tuning support along with a similar list for gearboxes and compatability between them so that those of us looking to carry out an engine conversion can have a handy chart to see which engine and gearbox combinations best suite our needs. For example, I have been thinking of fitting a bigger engine to my cortina and am presently looking at three engine options and three gearbox options. Two of the engines and two of the gearboxes are Ford, the other engine and gearbox is Rover but I've been warned of limitations with the Rover gearbox (very heavy) and one of the Ford gearboxes (a bit weak). A reference chart would make hunting down suitable combinations a bit easier. Just a thought. Regards, Smiler. Oh, and I missed that copy of Practical Classics I'm afraid.

All I can say, after fitting the 302 to my Capri, is what a wonderful engine it is. With the alloy heads on it, it weighs about the same as a Pinto. Another good choice would be the Cosworth Cologne 2.9 V6. I wouldn't go for a Rover. They're not very powerful, cost a lot to tune, nasty gearbox (as you point out) and they're huge.
I like your idea and we've discussed such a chart.
Cheers

The 24valve Cosworth was one on the list, as was a modified carb fed 12valve 2.9. However, the 302 has now got my attention as I didn't realise they were that light. Now, I just need that list to source a gearbox to go with it. ;D Cheers.
