It depends on the space available; eg. a 1300 mk2 golf engine leans forward, so plenty of space at the rear of the engine to mount them; I had to make mine short as the guy I did it for wanted to run with long rubber tubes from the steel manifold to the CBR carbs; much of the manifold I fabb'd sits inside these rubber sleeves/tubes... Mine were longer when I finished, but I cut them down to a uniform length afterwards; its proberly a good idea to do this before you start the welding... I did have pin-hole leaks on one or two;(your enemy if you decide to mig weld them); hence the heavily linished welds...lol

How do the throttle linkages work on bike carbs with a butterfly? Are they linked by an adjustable rod type mechanism like twin Stomberg/SU type carbs?

Well I bought a laser cut plate for my inlet manifold today so there's no turning back now! Would anyone mind if I kept this thread updated as I made my manifold etc?

Hope it's ok to post pics of my efforts so far on this thread ? Not fitted to the car yet (mk3 Escort) so still lots to do but I'm determined to have it running with these on. I split mine in to 2 pairs so the tubes didn't have to be at such a sharp angle for carbs 1 & 4. Spent tonight making a longer linkage to go from number 2 carb to number 3 carb but I'm still not happy with it. I too bought a lazer cut plate from a seller on ebay for about 20 notes delivered so didn't see the point lashing one up myself. I put a slight bend in all 4 tubes then tacked them in place before cutting the ends down to match. Had to open out the holes in the plate as I ported my head last year and the inlets are now huuuuuge. I'm well happy with it all so far. ;D

Wilko, CV bike carbs (banks of 4 type anyway) are generally operated by a cable to a pulley, which is linked to the carbs, so there's a sort of horizontal link between them. Often there's a 2-cable system, one to open, one to close, although the closer isn't always needed. For balancing, the carbs are linked in pairs, so you do say 1-2 together, then 3-4, then bring the two pairs together. There's vacuum take-off ports on the inlet side. You can get pretty close by using a MIG wire or guitar string to adjust the butterflies, but 4-dial vac gauges are best.
Slide carbs, the slides are directly mechanically operated, where with CV carbs the slide rises on demand in response to vacuum.

Great thread, thanks for the info. Just tonight i was looking at (slighty off topic) my twin 40's and the manifold they came with that is so wrong and wondering how best i should go about fitting them - loads of inspiration on here now. Just need to find somewhere to cut the maniflod plate to get it started i suppose. Thanks again RR!

Leigh; hang onto that 'wrong' manifold; it might be of use in the bike carb application; you could modify it or have some type of 'adaptor' to the bike carbs, made...

I see bike carbs in my future. What I'm after is separable ones that are 38mm or larger. The only ones Ive seen that fall into that category are GSXR750 and R1. Are there any others? Also, I see a lot of people recommending the bike pump that comes with the carbs. Does this need to be mounted in the engine bay, or will it be OK near the tank?

i have a set of old cbr600 carbs from a d-reg bike they don't have a fuel pump as its all gravity fed so I'm guessing would either use the existing pump or have to buy a cheap pump ??

moggyman pump in engine bay seems to work for this chap ? Mine are Yammy R6 carbs which you can separate and they are 38mm. Older YZF750 are about the same & even older FZR1000 too.. . I like Yamaha's see. Found this thread whilst browsing today. www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=103402 Scroll down about half way, chap called Super Six seems to have a lot of useful info & a fair bit of experience with bike carbs.

You just need a low pressure feed of some sort, so the bike pump is ideal if available.
Wouldn't worry so much about venturi size, unless there's a particular reason to. My tuned 1260 bike ran 38mm carbs off a 750 just fine. My litre bike is on 29's. Smaller carb = better signal, better low-down response. The banked-4 carbs are all separable (that a word??) but the linkage enables them to be balanced, plus o'course single point of operation for throttle and choke. Spose other ways of balancing could be used though, but the std vacuum off the inlet side way is accurate.
edit - just to be clear for the record - not done bike carbs on a car, but a lot of bike carbs on bikes.

Balanced mine by eye so far. Had such a load of grief making the longer link between 2 & 3 carb. I have spent all of today getting it right ! It's not pretty but solid and it works. choke plate was easy enough to make bigger I just chopped it in the middle, added some tin & welded it all together. Again not pretty but I'm past caring as long as it works.

If you slide a bit of MIG wire or similar under the butterflies (throttle stop adjusted to give some air), then equalise the drag on it by the plates, fix the tickover after. Works well but still not as close as gauges. Bet that was fiddly joining them up

I have the carbs,.. I'm hoping to have a spare head on the way... then I think I'll be throwing them and some cash at black8driver to make me a manifold... then there is just the small matter of setting them up ... and the fuel pump ...
