was watching the two vids we sell in halfords yesterday; the history of rallying, 1970, and then the same one, but for 1980.
and thoguht it was a close call as to what was better.
the 70's had more 'affordable' rally cars, and drivers such as roger clark. twas also the start of the escorts rallying success. not to mention the lancia strato's, and abarths.
whilst the 80's had a load of great drivers, the mk2 escort at its most successful. not to mention the whole group b thing!
please explain your reasons, including as many pics as poss ;D ;D ;D

Are you sure the Mk2 was most successful in the 80's? I know they had their best year then, but thought this would have been outweighed by all the victories during the 70's.
I'd probably go for the 80's to be honest, you can still watch clubman rallying nowadays which involves Mk2's and the like, where-as you cant see any Group B's competing other than the odd 6R4.

The 70's of course Actually, hard to decide, I like both a lot, the group B era being truly awesome! But the 70's provided a lot of pure quality cars too. Just a shame I'm not old enough to remember

'70's, all the way. The cars were alot more "off the shelf"... the 'works' stuff wasn't a million miles away form what you could buy outta the showroom / create for yourself.
The 80's group B stuff just threw lots of money at it, and kind of detatched it from "reality" somewhat..... if that makes any sense?

I see what you mean, I admire the Group B cars a lot, but I know for a fact I'll never own a car even similar to one of them, whearas the 70s rally cars were more approachable, from the Minis and Imps that were still giving it their all in the amateur ranks up to the legendary stuff of the times, they're all cars that you might dream of building yourself, hell nowadays you can even build yourself a mkII Escort or Chevettet that's faster than the works cars ever were, you'll never be able to aspire to that sort of project with a Lancia 037 or Ford RS200, even if they are seriously bloody cool. So it'd have to be 70s for me, although there were some attainable rally cars of the 80s too, Estelles and similar, but there were more so in the 70s.

I`ll have to agree with Nick and Rev, both have good points. They were more affordable then. I just keep remembering a certain 80`s Renualt outrunning the chase helicopter on gravel. From a standing start

I wasn't about for the 70s stuff either unfortunately, and I only vaguely remember any motors at all from the 80s because I was only born during them.

One thing I remember about the greatest years of rallying 70`s was ari vatanen blowing the diff on his escort and then his mechanics finding a spectator driving a 3.0 litre capri and wipping the diff out of that. Classic! ;D ;D ;D

Okay, I'll come clean. I'm a dunce and haven't worked out how to post pix here yet. The 70s and the 80s both had their merits, in my view. I couldn't choose. However, the first pic Blownimp posted - that gorgeous Jag Group C racer - brought back memories of the Brands Hatch 1000 km endurance race back in 1991 or so. The Jag XJR-9 is, without doubt, the best sounding car I ever heard. More than 800 bhp of production-based, 7-litre V12 through open pipes. It brought tears to the eyes, it sounded sooooo fabulous! ;D ;D Went pretty well too, by the way. So maybe the 80s just sneaks in there for me... Although the Imp did win the BTCC three years running in 1970, 71 and 72 (when I was born)... ;D ;D ;D I'm
