Hi,
Did you keep a std screen with your car, ferrousbuler? I like the look of the front screen on your car. The first time I have seen mini Sprint was in Mini Machine, I think it was '96 or so. I also liked Oz version of 2+2 they made with raked front screen.
I wish I have money like Mark Foster to get Mr. Mini Sprint to do it for me but I'm stricted to my budget of non existant! So, I have do do it myself.
Your car looks mean and very street GTS. If I get half of that look with mine, I will be very happy man!
Cheers Atchi

all the glass was cut to suit the chop, the front and rear screens are chopped down laminated front screens. the side windows are new, made from toughened glass.
the glass was very easy - and far cheaper than i expected. the side windows cost about 30 a piece. and made at a place that sold household glass.
they had never done glass for a car before, but as it was flat it was easy.
getting the front and rear screens cut was harder, i made the pattern and gave the guy about 10 screens and told him it didnt matter if he broke them. i think he used five to get two good ones.
he did the glass for mark forsters at the same time, so the cost wasnt to bad

Hi ferrousbuler,
I have seen MF's mini sprint, very nice. I'm using std size front and rear screens. I'm hoping to get glass cut once I finish for all of the sides. Or I will get scratch resistant poly windows made. Either way, it is a long time to that state. I will be starting my wiring soon. Swift Gti looms into Mini will be fun!
Cheers Atchi

Atchi the side windows are new, made from toughened glass. ...the side windows cost about 30 a piece. and made at a place that sold household glass. they had never done glass for a car before, but as it was flat it was easy. sorry but this is NOT the way to do it (for anyone reading and thinking of replicating this). automotive glass is not the same as toughened household glass. you will regret it horribly if you crash. epic fail....

sorry but this is NOT the way to do it (for anyone reading and thinking of replicating this). automotive glass is not the same as toughened household glass. you will regret it horribly if you crash. epic fail.... I'm sorry, but your wrong. It comes with all the safty marks etched onto it, and when it breaks, breaks into the same sized chunks as 'automotive' safety glass. there is no difference in size between the broken 'bits' and broken 'bits' from a factory std window. When it was ordered the people who tempered it where aware it was for an automotive application. The only difference is that a peice of glass made by an automotive company will have a different 'bs' number etched on than a item made by a general purpose company. The glass standard and the method of tempering the glass remains the same. The only time the company i used cannot etch a window is if they have cut a laminated (flat only, they cannot cut curved screens) peice for a windscreen (in a vintage vehicle for example). this is because the 'bs' number on a windscreen can only be done by a company whos business is the manufacture of windscreens. - this is more to do with the paper trail required for health and safety, than quality or specs of the glass. This company also makes replacement side windows for the busses used by the local bus company - lets hope they don't have a horrible crash... i just don't see why i will regret taking the time to get the windows made from toughened glass, rather than the lazy option of using plasic, or indeed why its an epic fail........

Hi,
I'm not lazy! I want to make my car lighter and also thought it will make safer driving in a circuit and so on. If I was lazy, I wouldn't be building this car...lol!
Anyway, I know what you getting at. It will be good to have toughened glass but I don't know where to get it from and my friend has special plastic which won't scratch, I think.
Cheers Atchi

Hi, I know it has been while but page 16!? I had a visit from Jon from Mini Magazine for a photo shoot... I did kitchen dinner floor and girls play room floor with wooden floor. I cut myself good with a circular saw, then I had a chest infection and 2 nasty cold and a flu later. I'm back on my mini project again! Tonight, I torque down my cam housings. I have now taken off my front subframe and finishing off/tidying up ready to paint. Also sametime, I'm building BMW bike ITBs to custom made an inlet flange for my turbo engine. Which reminds me to get in touch with Jerry.. I shall post my progress more frequent from now on! Cheers Atchi

Today, I finalised and fitted quick release boss system to my steering column. I needed to modify a lot to be able to use with my system. I wanted to keep centre horn push as I'm using mk1 Gti steering column switch and so on. If I used as it was supposed to fit, I won't be able to take out switch gears. So, I needed to modify a lot of things to fit nicely and safe for the steering function. The hex nut (from above pic) was modified and spline bush fitted inside and welded. Then steering mount plate was fitted with adaptor to a quick boss. The boss has a contact plate with wire attached to work with horn botton. This is how it looks and works. Puch the pin in and steering wheel comes off. This is what it looks like when fitted. Cheers Atchi

Hi, This afternoon, I have painted a lot of thing. First, I cleaned and treated surface rust with converter. Then sprayed with a can of spray primer but I forgot to take a pic! While my engine bay is getting dried. I brush painted my subframe with Hammerite Black smooth paint. Then I sprayed my engine bay with red colour I'm hoping to use. It is Ford "Radiant Red" but it seems lighter than I hoped. I can start to assemble my engine bay with all these work done! Cheers Atchi

Hi, Today, I struggled with engine and gearbox for a while. I used a dammy gearbox which is empty and dummy engine which didn't have internal as well. So trying to fit engine and gearbox which has everything in was very heavy and alining clutch and an input shaft was very difficult. So in the end, I took out engine and fit gearbox first and man handled everthing back in! This is the time, I'm grad I made removable front end! Then few hours later, I fitted everything else. R1 carbs, cylinder head and it will be ready to torque down once I get a tool I need. I made an airbox mounting plate from 3mm ali plate and then I got it laser cut by a local firm. I have offseted 5mm to lower side so that airbox will be fitted lower than I made before. I hope I can fit clutch cable and pedal box soon to try how heavy it will feel with my pedalbox. Cheers Atchi

Hi, After making a floor mounted pedal box, I didn't like how my steering column was placed. so I decied to go ahead and re-do it. I think main reason I didn't like it was that it was made to go with MG Midget pedal box and only 2 holes are used to fix to the body. So, here goes.... This was what it was like. Then I cut off what I can and weld in extra reinforcement in. Then using small square tubes and threaded studs. I made 2 mounting points at the back. Also, I made an extra bracket to which I can weld bar from top rail. Then I sit in the driver seat and make sure it is in right place for me. After achieving that I welded in 2 more tubes in to reinforce it. I'm not sure I need to add another reinforcement or not but this is how it looks from side. This is from the driver's seat and you can see it has been off set it to the right. So it is right in front of me not slightly to the left as std. mini setup! While I'm at it, I thought I need to think of radiator fitting. So I dig out a pipe which connect a water pump to a radiator. There was wrong bend in it so I cut, shorten and straighten and weld it. I still got to make water take off from the cylinder head to be radiator so that it won't have 90 degree bend in a connecting pipe. Cheers Atchi

Hi, This weekend, I managed to finish brake pipes. So both front and rear pipes are complete thanks to Jimmy. I'm running all of pipes inside the car to make sure non of pipes will get damanged. So I started off with master cylinders. Then brake bias valve for the rear setup. Then just come out above the rear beam. For the front setup, took me while. I welded old subframe plate and reinforced a bit. This is the driver side. All I have to do now is to get a remote resoivour and start to bleed system. Cheers Atchi

Then just come out above the rear beam. All looking good Atchi but I would certainly think about protecting the brake pipe where it crosses over the beam. Vibrations from constant driving may cause the pipe to chafe and fracture. Perhaps some rubber edging trim on the beam right under the pipe might work.

Hi Torquesport,
At this time, it is dry build so I will bare in that in mind. I have to drill holes for all of T-piece to bolt onto then I can fit rubber trim like you said. I have to fit a rubber gromit thingy as well as 6mm fuel pipe.
I couldn't do anything until brake pipe was made so I can progress with my build again.
Cheers Atchi

Hi, I had a photo shoot in Jan this year and now I'm on Mini Magazine June issue. I haven't finished my Mini yet but it is "on the job" section and 3 pages of it. When you go to Library service of WHSmith, you just check it out! Description is bit wrong but I will have 140Bhp with R1, cams and modified head! Also, I got next engine setup to follow so it isn't too far out! I look wide due to lens camera man used!...... so I hope. Cheers Atchi

Hi, This weekend, I started to look at my wiring. This is what I got! It is mk1 Swift Gti wiring and I'm hoping to fit into my mini. I checked with my service manual. I won't need rear hatch lock wiring and a rear wiper setup. So I started to take out. I need to repair some wires as well as take out some connections. It looks like I will be doing this for a while! Cheers Atchi

Hi, While I'm busy with wiring harness, I have been working on a new radiator setup. I asked my good friend of mine to do aluminium welding so that I have 90 degree water take off. I cut Gti take off and mini 1000 set up to welded together. I used Gti hose pipe to see if it works. I think top hose works ok, I need to do bottom hose to complete. I have started to make frame works for radiator to mount with. I have made one side from 6mm rod but I'm not sure if this will be strong enough. What do you think guys!? Cheers Atchi
