OK, I'm after a fun pick up thing as a project. Tempted by the Golf Caddy but had a lot of VW and they seem a bit over priced (with the exception of the nice one for £500 notes on here I missed!). So considering a Subaru MV 284 Pick up. But know nothing about them and only ever seen a few. The unusual looks appeal, like a smaller version of Earl Hickeys pickup. 4WD could be handy I suppose as well. Anyone have any experience of these, failed to turn up much on the internet for info barely any photos. I'd like to go the usual dropped and rims approach whilst still keeping useable. Is an axle flip possible/required given it's a 4wd? Presume reliability is high, and what about the performance, not after fast but not something that'll hold up the traffic! And a lifted one: I'm oddly liking the Impreza rims on this one, but would look better lower:

I've always quite liked them, I see one in my work car park quite often.
These are liked by farmers so look out for miss use and neglect but mainly rust.

I've never had one myself but grouning up rural means I know plenty of people who have. I have a high regard for these pickups, they are amazingly capable shifters of stuff and tow cars, plus they grow old so they're well screwed together.
They do however have a bit of a scene tax - not "scene" in a splitty-with-roofrack kind of way but scene as in farmers without one will go the extra mile to get one.
There was a fantastic one in a car lot in Banbury a couple of years ago for about a grand that I was half convincing myself to buy.

Aux on this here board had one, and had only good stuff to say.
Go onto Youtube and search Subaru Brumby on there, the metalic red one above with the turbo poking through the bonnet has a nice Video there.
I would have one tomorrow , but right now space is a bit of a problem

A friend of mine has one, he loves it but I believe finding rims to fit is an issue. Got a strange pcd and centre bore. Oh yeah, Earl Hickey had an el camino, the girl had the brat.

Aye but it looks like a miniaturised El Camino if you squint a bit! They ride on adjustable torsion bars front and rear IIRC. I know you can raise the suspension just with a screw or something - it's detailed in the handbook. Maybe you can lower them like that too. I really want one, appealingly useful and dated.

farmers around here love to death.rear end rots around the rear subframe mounts and in the rear inner arches.independent suspension allround so no axle flip.

Awesome motors. Yeah they rot badly, farmers and shooting-party types abuse them too. You will need to be, or have access to, a good welder. As has been said, they have adjustable torsion bar suspension, but they don't go that low. Can get some good rake though. It will take a fair amount of work to get one proper low. They have 1600 and 1800 flat-four engines mated to a 4-speed box, never come across an MV (Multipurpose Vehicle ) with a 1600, the 1800 pulls well and is suprisingly nifty for whats essentialy an agricultural work-horse. Front wheel drive with engagable 4-wheel drive, with Hi and Low ratios, they are pretty good off-road- especially mud and fields. They have bolt on steel sump-guards too, which is handy as they don't have massive ground clearance. Wheel PCD is freakish, cant remember what it is now, ive never come across any sort of aftermarket rims unless they are redrilled. That said, the original steels can look good- especially banded Service parts are still available from Subaru dealerships, and there still spares kicking about in scrappies if you hunt around. I know of a breakers in east anglia that has 4 or 5 in various states of cannibalisation. Get one! ;D Heres my old one which was rescued from a one-armed mans orchard... and...

Ta for all that, especially Aux!
And for all those now tempted - clear off I suggested first :-)
Just lost out on a Porka 924 on ebay tonight, off to see a camper tomorrow and then looking for one of these (varied choice I know).

That my friend is indeed the beauty of the hobby we pursue.... Variety, and most people do not get that you can get excited about a COE truck and then go bid on a Camprvan, or next up a Fiat 500. Great write up Aux.

Great timing - I saw one of these t'other day on my lunchtime stroll in Leamington. Hadn't seen one since I were a young whippersnapper growing up in the wilds of Worcestershire - all the farmers had 'em back then but of course they're all in crewcab Navaras and the like now!
Have always fancied one tbh . . . and now you've got me going again!
Is the turbo lump a relatively easy fit?
