I got hold of a couple of gallons of diesel I want to put in the BMW. Thing is, I'd like to filter it first just to make sure there's no curse word floating in it from the car it came from, or from the makeshift vessels it's contained in. Is there a well known easy method for doing this? I'm thinking about pouring it into a fuel can through a coffee percolator filter (those paper types). Reckon that will do it? Or is there a simpler / better method? Thanks.

Coffee filter or paint filter would have been my first thought too, can't see why it wouldn't work. Though TBH for the sake of a couple of gallons I personally wouldn't take the risk.

Yea this is what I'm concerned about too. Might be more trouble than it's worth? It's been in sealed containers since being drained from the scrapped car but still can't guarantee it hasn't got water in it.

Meh, it'd save you about a tenner in fuel but could cost a LOT more if its dirty!
Just go find a seagull or seal and give it a 'shower'*

id just use a little bit at a time. Put 5 litres in then fill yer tank. Change yer fuel filter first.

throw it in tbh, just check your filters regularly and drain off the water with the screw on the bottom on the fuel filter to let out the water already trapped.
Diesels use very fine filters as the fuel pumps have very high tolerences so the filter will get rid of the curse word and Water already builds up in the fuel system so they made ways to seperate that aswell.
(if your not gonna use it ill have it ;D)

get a loaf of cheap ass white bread, cut the ends off, and pour it through that.
I'm not joking! This tip was given to me by a crazed 'grandparent-in-law' once.
Obv the bread is scrap afterwards, cant even be used for bread + butter pudding sadly.

i have fitted a glass bowl filter on the landy to prefilter a curse word i put in it so i would just chuck it in. for a posh car? standard filter would more than likely be fine but.... use it for partswashing, it's safer

Thanks for the replies and advice! I love the loaf of bread idea... None of that posh seeded loaf then... ;D For the sake of a tenner's worth of dizzle it's maybe not worth the risk. If it was a couple of barrels full I might be off to raid the skips behind Greggs the bakers.
Well, I've got the gearbox to do at some point so I'll use some of the diesel to clean the sump etc., should do nicely for that.
I'm not sure I'm quite traveller enough to use it in the Bim. And I am quite traveller at times... Perhaps I'll tuck it away until some kind of Mad Max scenario occurs. Or sling it on a fast roundabout for some TyTE UNeXPEKTD DriFT!N AKsh0N! from unsuspecting motorists...

should be fine tbh water will drop to the bottom after about a week so leave it to stand then after a week pour it in and leave about half a liter in the barrel just in case theres water there as for bits your car filter will do the rest unless its serious amounts which i doubt

I remember my dad pumping diesel out of a petrol car with an electric fuel pump he got from a scrap yard out if a car (cant remember which one) and connecting it to the car battery. Now, in theory would it not be possible to use this fuel pump idea, with an inline fuel filter on the out pipe to filter the diesel? Just an idea, probably complete ballcocks, but hey...
|
|
Use the diesel for washing your kegs in. The diesel will lubricate the cotton fibres and make them last longer although your nads will honk of diesel. Also don't use red diesel for this for obvious reasons.

Only turn em round whilst driving and hang em out the window to "freshen" them for 5 mins in between ;D Just get a jerry can with a leccy fuel pump and filter gaffa taped to the handle and filter as you transfer Tis what us traveller types do when we frag a car ;D
