OK so I didn't want to take over Stu's thread and drag it off at a tangent, but his Horizon pic has got me thinking! My only knowledge of these is that they were a French Golf competitor, and that a bloke across the road from me had a dark blue one with a pale blue interior for years. I could hear the tappets rattling away every morning as he started it up as I walked past to school (why do they do that so badly? Poor design?). So what's there to know? Any good? Don't see many of them now! never seen a van one before:

VERY Mk1 Astra: I thought the Turbo was only a prototype, didn't realise they'd built any? According to this: www.allpar.com/omni/omni.htmlamerican versions ran Golf engines... Hmm... wonder if you could stuff a VAG 20valve Turbo lump in? ;D

Yeah, the US 1600 and 1700 Mk1 Golf blocks were used in those, funny old business!

The description in "Jalopy" magazine I believe went thus:
"A Simca 1100 wearing a false moustache and swollen wheelarches does not a new car make"
I nearly bought one once. A lovely 1300cc version from circa 1981 in primrose yellow with turd colour interior.
Sadly I decided that cycling would be a less stressful and embarrasing (and probably quicker) method of transport.

Another car thats TOTALLY disappeared in the last 10 years. I think that's partly due to the fact that they RUST LIKE A BA$TARD! I would dearly love one, with an insane 4-pot under the bonnet! But I'd like a Talbot Samba even more....

Those tappet noises are legendary, so much so that Peugeot built them in most their eighties cars....
I don't recall those turbos making it over the UK though. Shame. But I'm sure a 1.9 Peugeot turbo lump will drop in nicely.

a bloke mrsigma used to know had a totally stock looking one with a pug 1.9 gti motor stuffed in it. cool as flip when he blew the boys at the lights I like the sound of that! Wonder if an Mi16 would fit then ;D I reckon they're all long-scrapped too... Same with Solaras and Alpines of the same era. I never really appreciated French cars at that time, but I'm beginning to now. All that wacky dashboard, roly-poly soggy suspension and dodgy build quality turned me off 'em, but I guess anything that's survived this long can't be too bad? Interestingly, can't find any for sale on the 'bay - here or in France!

Mr_B - does your Alpine have the off-white plastic bumpers? I never understood why they did that. Citroen too with the Visa. I mean, how on earth do you keep it clean? Euro-look would definitely work, just like a Mk1 Astra... Shiney, stripped out, bright colour, chrome bits, fat wheels

The first time I saw a Tagora was in the scrappers a few months ago. It's weird - it's as if they thought "right, let's build a massive saloon", then ran out of ideas when it came to filling the insidey bit with interior stuff . Looked dead basic: couple of seats, little dash, no centre console.... that's it Strange folk, them Frenchies! ;D
