Picked up this Hydragas pump from a forum member recently, Its a very old Churchill unit, as used in BL dealerships. Apart from having its legs cut off at some point its in pretty good shape. The pressurising side of things is working fine but the suction side has the handle missing and a new one needs fabricating. As it was working pretty well and was in usable condition the first thing I did was to completely take it to bits, rendering it useless. Great idea! My allegros still wonky and now ive got bits everywhere. The hydraulics were stripped out and are awaiting inspection and repair. The suction cylinder looks to be knackered and was possibly the reason why the handle was removed, to prevent people trying to use it. Ill see what can be done to get it all working again. The hydragas fluid reservoir wad been damaged somehow and repaired with fiberglass. It was leaking and in my effort to repair it it ended up completely wrecked. A new one will be fabricated... Unsure how exactly... Meanwhile the outer panels and "chassis" have been shot blasted and primed ready for the top coat of hammerite. It was surprising how pitted and rusty it all was! Its so satisfying to see rust and flaky paint give way to fresh shiny metal and new paint! OK.. so its not quite a Jag e-type nut and bolt resto but its something with a bit of heritage behind it that is an essential piece of kit for any hydragas suspended car owner. Pics of the hydraulics and mangy tank to follow.

Excellent work Tim. I like seeing resto's that are a bit different. How do you get away with doing that on the dining table though? 'er indoors would go smegging mental if I tried it!

Its worse than that, its a dining table inside a conservatory! She said I was "f**king dead" if any paint got on the table. I promised none would, and she was ok with it!
TBH I think she feels sorry for me working outside all the time. No workshop for me so looks like the conservatory will have to do.
Seriously though, if theres any red oxide anywhere shel kill me.

After a packet of these.. I think I'm just about out of curse word street. Ive tidied everything up and shes not the wiser, mums the word chaps;) A bit of progress anyway.. the outer panels have been painted in silver hammerite and the bare skeleton frame has been painted with gloss black smoothrite. Just got to repair the hydraulics, give them a polish and reassemble!

That's identical to the one we used to use at Rover when I worked there, apart from ours was blue and didn't have the legs cut off...
...Not really identical then I suppose, but you know what I mean ;D

Ive no idea what colour this was originally.. When I got it it was just a mush of overspray and rust! If id known it was blue originally I think thats the colour I would have sprayed it in. Still, silvers looks ok to me. Heres a pic of the tank. Its well and truely had its chips. Nothing left to do but adapt another tank to fit or make another somehow.. unless I can graft a new corner onto it, but thats impossible, isnt it? I had a crack at the hydraulics today too... Its hard going! Everything is covered with a strange substance thats looks like a mixture of old grease and dust. Flashwipes are innefective, a brass wire brush only just shifts it. Everything looks to be made of brass so I'm planning on polishing it all up... Pimp my hydragas punp, Dibnah style!

2 things Tim Firstly - I just did the same in the lounge (she's in London for the weekend) so the floor just got scrubbed to death..... (have to clean the rest of the place ir she'll twig ) Second - how do you go about getting these things apart - info on them etc... as I'd love one (for the Austin) but haven't EVER seen one outside a specialist here. Is there a web site I can't find? Good luck with the mytery substance......

Funny you should mention the dusting of primer everywhere. I fooled the wife no problem but I nearly got caught out a few days later when she found my socks in the wash... the soles of them were covered in red paint! I just denied all knowledge and she believed me... just put it down to "one of those things".... phew. As for getting info on these things, I dunno, I don't have any! I just heard of this one going cheap and went for it. I had no idea on how to take it apart or where to get bits but everything seems to be standard hydraulic stuff that can be found at pirtec or similar. I'm pretty much just making it up as I go along. don't know where id get seals from should I need any. No idea if theses a website either! Modern version of these are easily available on sites like Egay but its hard to get anything for less than £150-£200+ Humm, similar!

We've got one of these in mint condition sitting in the garage, when my dad got it I thought it was a fruit machine! I was only young like! If theres anything you need info for give me a shout! Weve got a smaller blue one too, but it never really gets used, the churchill one has never let us down. A couple of years ago he enquired about a new seal kit and union just in case he needed it. I think it must have been quite expensive as he didnt bother getting it! Oh yea, I'm still laughing at the dog! ;D

Tim
is that broken tank plastic?? - if it is it looks to be almost identical to one of my old man's camping water drums - except on his the neck is offset to one side - maybe worth a trip to millets??
deffo see the dalek connection, weirdly one of my raleigh chopper chums now makes daleks and related stuff - but his missis wont let them in the house!!!

id adapt it so you could sit a 5 litre commer hydro fluid tub into the top and just drop inlet/outlet hoses straight in through the top

If you've ever been to have your MGF pumped up recently, you will see that they still use the same old hand pumps. Only a handful of garages do it nowadays.
