Basically he was trying to get people who drive old cars to replace them with brand new ones as he was saying they were cheaper to run.
One guy believed in bangernomics and had a rover 620 he was running into the ground and they gave him a Fiat 500. Told him he would save £1500 a year in petrol and asked why is he turning that sort of money away.
What i couldnt get was why wasnt Quintin looking at depriciation on the 500 and the Dealer servicing costs required to maintain its warranty? He just looked at petrol costs?
Made me think the program had an ulterior motive?

This whinge bin is a pain in my backside I can see the idea of having a super forum where everyone is happy, but that isnt real life. Sometimes Mods, people want to talk about things like this and it doesnt exactly harm anyone and doubt very much it could lead to confrontation?  ?? |

I turned over just as it started, in the certain knowledge that it would make me want to throw things through the screen of my tv. And then I'd have to get a new tv, which is certainly not what I need in this economic climate... I mean, newer tvs might have better definition and use less energy, but this one only cost me 20 quid so I'm going to use it till it dies. Makes much more sense  |

I can sdort of see the arguement of where he is coming from on the economy side, and certainly the safety side. I would love a new Renault, not because I have any interest in any particular model, but because I know my kids will stand more of a chance If i have another accident. I'm just thinking the program missed out certain factors. Maybe its poor research on their part and just me being paranoid  |

I thought Quintin Wilson was all about retro and classic cars. Didn't he used to write about 'modern day' classics in Thoroughbred & Classic cars magazine? I haven't bought an issue in a while, but he used to have a regular column, too, I think.

I love the complete overlooking by the chattering classes that drivers of old cars often do so because they simply can't afford a new one. Sure a new Polo Bluemotion will cost you less to run day-to-day than a banger. But if you're on a low income I suspect keeping your kids fed and warm comes a tad higher up the scale than finding the several hundred quid a month required to pay off the Polo. Whinge bin? Quit whinging about it! I know of forums where anything that offends the moderators is deleted and often the poster is banned, the solution adopted here is far more civilised. We get to sound off, the board stays on-message, how much better does it get? |

Ask anyone who has had dealings with Quentin Wilson what kind of "accuracy" he aims for in his "journalism". I won't start another rant here but that "The car's the star" series he did caused plenty of rumpus at the time with the clubs involved in helping him put it together. Basically Wilson seems only to be interested in (1) showing off how clever he thinks he is (2) repeating all those "pub talk" myths like they were facts, rather than doing any research to find out whats the real story.
I find anything about cars on TV is best avoided because its just "buy a new car its cheaper to run, safer and better for the environment" or "girls won;t want to sleep with you unless you drive ...."

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who failed to see how the economics worked. I kinda liked the first half of the program but the downsizing I didn't get.
If anything the program seemed to be concluding that the good deals are in up-sizing to newer bigger, luxury cars but then gave advice to the contrary.

If I wanted to go and have a whinge about something, TV or Politics or whatever, I'd do it elsewhere. There are plenty of other places to do it. This forum has a focussed subject, lets keep it to that. It has managed alright for the past 5 years. |

On a retro note then, theres another classic program on with that bloke and the gilr penny from the used car road show, yesterdays episode had some blokes seeing what MPG they could get from allegros and they were doing over 50mpg when driven carefully. Classic gear i think its called, its an hour show and has been pretty good so far.
