I have to say why are all the topics in the whinge bin locked? I can appreciate the bit about 'negative comments', but it's just not natural or realistic to never have a negative view on a forum! As long as a discussion is done in an adult and civil manner, why not let them carry on in that section of the forum? As for directing people to Pistonheads, how will that make some new members feel welcome? This is the only forum I am on that does this, and I have to say it's the only thing that spoils a brilliant forum. BTW I would have put this in the Whinge bin myself, but I can't start a post there! ;D Edited by BC Title changed was Whinge Bin And moved to the whinge bin - no content altered

I think the whinge bin is an excellent idea, and is designed to keep the forum on topic. If the threads weren't locked then they would just continue on and on, just in a different part of the forum, which isn't what RR is about. I can see that it might upset new members if they don't know how RR works, but there is the forum "Modus Operandi" which explains exactly what this place is about. If someone hasn't read that then they can't really get upset when a rubbish thread moaning about this, that or the other gets locked and binned. There have been other, softer methods employed in the past (the Modus Operandi, self-moderation with cat pics, etc) but they haven't worked. I think the Whinge Bin is firm, but fair. Personally I don't want to see the forum clogged up with rubbish threads complaining about eBay, the EU, crappy TV programmes etc. I want threads about cool retro cars, interesting discussions on modifications, road-trip reports, technical discussions and RR meets.

Total members 1, I can see that worked! ;D Having looked at the Whinge Bin, most of the topics in there were initially RR related. By all means move topics there, but why lock them? The Dictionary definition of Forum is a place to air views or discuss specific matters. Surely this great forum isn't just here to post nice pictures? Is it?

Exactly, if they are completely against forum policy, why not just delete them? Some of the posts in there I would like to add to, and I am sure I am not alone. Some of them run into 2 or 3 pages, so there must have been some interest in the topics. As for non retro topics clogging up the forum, if they are moved there, they won't be, and if they they just continue on and on, they wouldn't do if there was no interest in them.

Whinging threads are popular, which is often the problem. Having the first page of the forum containing five six-page threads about different ways to punish the traveller that scratched your car, how the government hates retros or how unfair it is that you got done for speeding when there are rapist immigrants claiming housing benefit in Kensington doesn't add to the forum positively.
Why don't they just get deleted? Sometimes they're interesting and sometimes they serve as a method of showing the sort of thing that will get deleted or moved...sometimes it's both.

I'm sorry for you if what you want to do is whinge about cars/life/tv/politics/whatever and fill the world with negative things. I don't and I don't want it on my forum. I could just delete them but as rmad points out, they work as a good guide on what sort of things end up in there.
There are plenty of other forums when you can whinge about stuff... look someone even set one up for you. Retro Rides is Retro Rides specifically because we don't have this kind of stuff on here. That is how it is.

will this thread go in the whinge bin?
and then will someone start a thread whinging about it
only to be followed by lots of people explaining the whinge bin, and whinging about people posting off-topic stuff, that eventually ends up in the winge bin
and then will that thread go in the whinge bin?

I'm sure it'll happen one day... and I'll end up sticking them all in there.
It is not as if the board is short of posts that we need to fill it up with reactionary nonsense about little things (and big things) that annoy us. Lets keep it to the cool cars and leave the whining and moaning at the world to other people eh....

I think the problem is that life isn't always positive, and its healthy to want to vent your frustrations to your friends. I've had a REALLY bad week, at the end of a seriously rubbish month, and having to stay positive is doing my nut in, seriously. I'd love to be able to vent, and then laugh about it, but I can't. Fair enough to the everyone jump on the bandwagon "whoever" bashing that blights some threads, it's not needed, bin it. But ... whinging is part of human nature. Its what we do when we need cheering up, and I want to whinge sometimes, I really do. Just not to some other forum, cos all my mates are here
