I have seen fixed gear and single speed bikes on websites.
I thought I would build one.
I was given an Elswick Hopper Whirlwind racer by a bike shop. Looks to be an early 70s bike. I junked all the rusty running gear.
I built up a 27" chrome steel rim onto a Maillard alloy hub. Thats a 5 speed deraileur hub. I put all the spacers on the other side and dished it to that side. The frame is still the standard width.
I looked in my big box of cranks and got out a pair of SR Silstar alloy cranks in rough condition. The rings were 50 and 40 tooth. The 50 tooth had corroded teeth. Think it had been sitting on the ground. I cut and filed off the teeth from the big ring. Only the small ring is removable. The big ring is now a chainguard. I filed and sanded the cranks to get rid of scratches. There shiny Its geared 40 to 16 with a 27" wheel, 67" gear
I also sanded and polished a pair of Weimman 500 sidepull brakes. I built them up with stainless fasteners.
I fitted a SR aero stem with upturned and cut down bars. Theres CLB aero levers on there. With red foam for comfort.
I had mudguards from a Royal Enfeild roadster that I had got for spares. I fitted them as they are the same colour.
Both these bikes are badge engineered Raleighs. So it has the special Raleigh threading on the Steerer tube and the BB. I recut the BB to more normal threading. The cups were worn so I replaced them.
The bike originally had 26X1 1/4" wheels so the 27" are a bit tight in the mudguards. I had to ease the mudguard out a bit for clearance.
I'm wanting to fit a bottle Dynamo to the lamp bracket on the forks. But the bracket I'll have to make would have to be very long to clear the mudguard. I might cut away a bit of the mudguard. Ive got a front light that I got from the bargain bin in the bike shop. Its a dynomo light that has a mechanical speedo in it. Want to fit that.
