Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

street racing at 106 MPH on a public road - he should lose more than his car IMO. In the UK you would have to expect the risk of a custodial sentense doing that.

Respect to the man. Hopefully I'll be as delightfully bonkers 50 years from now.
Alistairk... spend a few minutes watching the M1 (unless its a camera section) and see how many are doing 100+ mph without getting caught. It's not exactly a rare occurrence.

100+ mph doesn't automatically mean death either, i don't see what all the fuss is about

Saw this on the tv news. Apparently the old bloke also has the largest collection of military equipment (tanks and such) in the state.
They showed a picture of his car, looked to be a Pulsar GTiR, AWD with the SR20 turbo motor.

With a bocephus sticker on his 442, he'd light 'em up just for fun

Old does not automatically mean braindead.
Sure, there is the "Law" and expected norms, but these wnakers who dive their plastic tossmobiles with wings, splitters, and shopping lists on the doors, with 6 month old drivers licenses at 40mph in residential areas, or past a school at 2pm...... I would say pose a much greater risk, than an old guy racing , potentially out in the open.
That said, Trackdays are probably the right place to go vent excessive testosterone.

As far as I spotted from the report I read: 1) he was actively involved in racing 2) it was a windy country road 3) he was caught in excess of 100 MPH. Regardless of what he collects or what a nice guy he might be that kind of thing has to be utterly unacceptable. Whats the difference between that behaviour and the max power idiots who put themselves and others in hospital or in the ground with those kind of antics?

That's just how you drive when you live in the country. You can't grow up watching Duke's of Hazzard then go out driving like victor meldrew.
KEEP IT REAL ;D

Whats the difference between that behaviour and the max power idiots who put themselves and others in hospital or in the ground with those kind of antics? I know he wasn't on the M1. What I was trying to point out and you missed was that he's not really a one off in this world of ours. The Max power idiots do it in built up areas.... which is blatantly dumb. That's where it differs. Speeds like this are only classed as unacceptable because the vast majority of people believe so... and the rules end up reflecting this. I don't know the road or the guy so I won't judge him. "winding country road" in Australia? So there's probably a slight left hand kink after the fiirst 157 miles. I don't suppose you've ever done anything that might be classed as "unacceptable" in modern society then? If you drink more than two nights in a row you're a "Binge drinker", which is unacceptable, you know. I know I have been "unnacceptable" before now and I'm not scared to admit it. Regards Ric

I don't know the road in question. It could be no houses around for a million miles. It could have houses both sides. I suspect you don't know the road either so we are both working on assumptions.
Point is, if someone were caught on a UK B road doing 106 MPH and racing another car they would pretty much get an automatic disqualification for a three figure speeding and the cops have been confiscating cars of boy racers here in Nottingham. I'm pretty sure I've heard of custodials being handed down to people for reckless driving without there being a fatality.
Theres a world of difference between doing 80, 90 or whatever on a motorway and a burnout in a pub car park to racing on public roads.

he'll just have to go out in his tank I think the fastest tanks can only do 50mph. and theres not much chance of dying if you crash. Also arent Tanks rated as agricultural vehicles so wont be on his car license, if its taken away

And we assume he was completely at his senses, no tunnel vision, no shakey head, brain talking to feet, and so on?
I'm glad he got nabbed because "Older people" get let off the hook too often. My wife (pedestrian) got mangled up when an 80 year old woman with Parkinsons lost control (in an auto) when parking and drove into her. Four smashed cars, demolished wall and 3 months wheelchair for the wife along with the lifelong after-affects. Driver got let off with no points and no fine. She's still driving. How's that for justice. Just 'cause she's old. It "was not in the interests of society" to punish her. You see things from another angle when you're close to someone who lived through it. (luckily)

Seems a lot of people are behind the old dude and I don't want to cause/start any arguments, But I have to say I'm with alistairk on this one. They're both being total morons. Yeah I'd love to still be looning around at 100+mph at 78 too. But on a track or private land!!
I might only be 24 but as a profesional driver dangerous driving really does wind me up, There's being silly and there's totally taking the piddle!
don't matter if it's a country lane, Motorway, Town or housing estate. It only takes one innocent motorist, Cyclist, Pedesrian etc to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and it's game over. As they say, Speedlimits are there for a reason, No ones going to debate 5 or even 10 mph over, But that is plain dumb
Guy deserves everything he gets IMO
