Being as Russia has experianced a lot of troubles since the fall of communism, some there look back to the old days as some kind of "golden age". Its the rose tinted spectacles thing I think. Some Russians are going back to the idea of Stalin as a great nationalist and unifer and strong leader blah blah blah. So I have no idea if it was done in seriousness or not.
Same way as Chairman Mao is still well regarded by some Chinese. And Mao merchandise sells! Mind you maybe it just sells to idiot tourists like me, but meh.

Me too! Got badges, hats, knife etc and a tiny clock with a Mao on the face, he waves as it ticks... class... the other half used to go to China a fair bit.
Anyway, the Volga is a bit vulga but what an ace shape it's got. Pro street, lower, torque thrusts, trad street-strip type thing would be the biz. Shoving a great yank V8 in there would be slightly ironic too.

You'd be surprised how many Russians see Stalin in a good light Oh, no, I'm well aware of that. But this isn't an uneducated forum, dumbed down by years of indoctrinal repression.... well.... I hope not, anyway. I assure you, over on the Alexander Szolzhenitsyn forums, Stalin is not well-regarded, with between 20M and 40M deaths placed at his feet, and whole races of people exterminated. One of his statements allegedly uttered to Churchill at Potsdam: "One death is a tragedy. A million is a statistic." Yeah, paint up a car with that jackass on it.

WOW that is awsome! Yeah the murals, wheels and a few other MINOR DETAILS are bad but just look at the interior. And x-raying both cars to line them up, amazing! Those who said it's curse word can't see the wood for the trees!

The x-raying idea is inspired, love it as a feat of engineering. The interior is fantastic too. And I think it's probably about the best thing you can do with a Cayenne. ;D There's often a VW Camper parked in my college car park with Che Guevara stencilled on the side, maybe I should show this to the driver...

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I think the main reason we see Stalin as different from Hitler is that good old Uncle Joe mainly killed his own people and was invaded first. Whether he was planning an attack of his own is up for debate but certainly Churchill hated Communism and Hitler envisioned Western Europe in a crusade against him. If anything Stalin was far more evil and calculating that Hitler Oh and here's a picture of his Zil Suffice to say, that's one car you would not be cutting up at a junction. I did read somewhere it didn't have mirrors as no one would dare overtake, not sure how true that is

Not worth it going for the museum alone as it's quite small, but if you're in Riga for any other reason deffo worth checking out. Aaand another edit in which I realize I posted a pic of Renault "Viva Grand Sport” instead of Joe's ZIS115!

Is someone in Uganda going to do an Idi Amin tribute car? Maybe Benz or BMW do an "Adolf" M-car? FFS! That's in such poor taste, I assumed it was done as a farce. Cambodians, yoo-hoo, a Pol Pot Panhard? You'd be surprised how many Russians see Stalin in a good light I can kinda imagine, they have a different view than us One of historys biggest mass murderers, celebrated in car form, great :-(

I think Stalin is as appropriate to retro motoring as the imperial Japanese flag is to a old J tin runaround.

Loving the car - apart from the murals and the wheels. Absolutely loving the engineering. Is someone in Uganda going to do an Idi Amin tribute car? Maybe Benz or BMW do an "Adolf" M-car? FFS! That's in such poor taste, I assumed it was done as a farce. Cambodians, yoo-hoo, a Pol Pot Panhard? You'd be surprised how many Russians see Stalin in a good light Dude you'd be surprised how many millions despise even his name being mentioned. It's kinda like saying you'd be surprised about how many people love Hitler in germany. Lenin maybe - stalin, deffo not. Most people have a relative that was sentnced/killed in a gulag.

trying gracefully to stay on car topics - there are Germans who think Hitler was ace, there are Brits who think we backed the wrong horse in WW2. Not a majority, but a surprising minority.
I did hear of a guy exporting a Volga out to the UK and he had it repainted from its factory black to bright pink,or yellow or some such colour because he had been warned that they still had "KGB image associations" and left unattended down the docks was liable to be torched by people bearing a grudge from back then.
Theres a guy who is collecting and preserving and restoring statues of Stalin and the other notables which were all torn down post-Glasnost. Saw a TV programme about him. Most odd.
