Also if you see one for sale the model year 80-81 I understand were fitted with a/c, mine is an 80 but no a/c. If you get one do as I was told to do and ditch the Zeniths for SU's a far far quicker vehicle, oh and lay off the throttle on roundabouts, at least untill your used to them. Mine is laid up at the moment, due to the sills no longer being there, start on her next week I hope. Andy.

Two things to watch out for with the classic, on V8 EFI the ECU(PRC9601E - sure that's the number) known to fail with age and repair/recon is getting harder although I believe ATP Electronics used to offer these exchange(repair components may have stopped this!). Secondly the BW transfer box, great piece of kit but watch for chain wear, it this goes it'll take the case with it. Chains aren't hugely expensive so well worth looking at early doors. Otherwise rotten inner wings/floors/tailgates are to be looked for!

People have the tech stuff, Just take your time chosing there are lots ot there and with everyone in full credit crunch panic mode there are bargains to be had, mine was 600 quid at the height of the fuel price madness but have never bought so much car and so much fun for so little money in short I love it get a good one never look back. Drove it offroad in the ice the other day which was fun then home down the motorway where it more than kept up if you know what I mean all the time loving the V8 sound track.

had several classic shapes 3.5 3.9 carb and injection and lpg auto and manual I now own a newer shape 4.6 P38, there all good fun and imho much better than a cherokee and much bigger inside if you plan to camp.. The engines are all fine as long as you don't fancy tuning them, they will run seemingly ok even when completely shafted so inspect carefully before buying (low oil pressure or flaky black crud in the rocker covers walk away) I never had more than 15mpg out of any of them (except the 4.6) a hard driven 3.5 carb I've had down to 6mpg...watch out for knackered dizzys worn out cams and dodgy flapper efi systems as parts can be expensive and tricky to diagnose.. They rot like fury everywhere but can still look ok from the outside check inner and outer sills inner front arches, tailgate and chassis minutely... buy the earliest 2 door or latest 5 door you can that way you can be surer of reselling it later.. Vogue SE spec is good as is aircon and LSE (lwb and 4.2) spec avoid the air suspension it's great but troublesome, I binned the lot on my 4.6 and fitted good ole springs.. Lpg is good but there are many dodgy systems out there fitted hold out for one with a pro intall and certificate Look for recent bushes and suspension upgrades and recent good quality tyres (the last set i put on mine were over £750 though these are 18"), and unless you plan to go properly off road get road bias tyres I have full road pirreli scorpions on mine and I've had it halfway up the doors in water and mud deeper than the axles and it never got stuck.. Also remeber there's loads and loads out there look at tons drive a few and make an informed choice if it looks to good to be true it probably is.. heres a couple of mine..

One thing to watch out for that hasn't been mentioned, the Borg Warner self leveling device off a rear x member, if there are problems with the leveling this item is exceptionaly difficult to obtain.

Andy. but it is fairly easy to remove if you're raising the ride height i think you have to remove it anyway? i know that forgetting to take it off of my brother's 110csw when he fitted +2inch springs turned the car into a pogostick

regarding mpg, you'll not get more than 15mpg on petrol from any of the engines unless you drive like a nun A nun writes: I've got a 1982 Stage 1 Land Rover and I got 20mpg from my last run, doing 65-70mph on motorways and 60mph on A roads. Having said that, I only get 12mpg on my 3 mile run to work Easier to fix than a Range Rover (sliding windows don't go wrong) but even with parabolic springs it's still a lot more agricultural on the road.

I bought a K-reg 300TDi about a month ago, and now I will never be without it if I can help it! I get early 30s mpg if I'm careful, early 20s if I'm not, and early 40s on a long run on the motorway. You can get an almighty amount of stuff in one, five folk, and yet it never feels particularly large or unwieldy to drive. Compare that to a Cherokee which if you're over six foot will give you chronic neck and backache and, strangely, I could never place accurately on the road.

'specially if you're running a pickup or open top? 20mpg on a run is pretty good for a rover v8, my father never got over 15mpg on his, 3.5carb, A-reg 4door RR, my uncle could edge 17mpg out of his on motorway runs (3.5EFI) i ran my father's 3.5carb for two weeks commuting to work in town, 16 miles each way at an average of 7mpg i nearly cried at spending £9 each way still, it sounded good

The engines are all fine as long as you don't fancy tuning them loads of places will sell you a very expensive bag of parts to get you to around 230bhp, chevy will sell you a 5.7L crate engine though, twice the power at half the price wonder if it's still possible to get your hands on the AJP 4.5v8? the one that TVR and Bowler used?

Just throw a spanner in the works, What about a Mitsubshi Shogun? You can pick up Early J-K plate ones up cheap enough now, They don't suffer from rot like the RR and I personaly find them a nice drive (Plus they don't make me feel sick driving them).
Could be worth looking into?.

can I see your wimple? ;D oooh, vicar never had the opportunity to play with a stage1 sadly but i'd guess that they're a bit lighter than a RR? 'specially if you're running a pickup or open top? Mine's the full fat 109 Station Wagon 12 seater, all standard but perhaps the overdrive helps economy a bit? Having said that, later Rangies were all 5 speed anyway

I second the Shogun suggestion, certainly one of the best value off-roaders that can also be a day to day driver at the moment.

Sadly not Martin. Still needs the welding doing. My mate can't do it yet because of the cold on his bad back.
