Do you know what i'd do to improve your fitness levels? I'd do a single speed conversion on whatever bike you have and just ride it as often as possible! Single speed mountainbiking is gonna get you fit...........fast!!!! And don't be fooled into thinking a £243555.00000072.99 mountain bike is what you MUST have because its simply not true

mine is a very basic mountain bike made by a company called stealth, have no pics of it unfortunately.
It has a fixed tail and has front and rear disc brakes. I was thinking of either upgrading the bike or upgrading parts on the bike i have, I have a twin suspension Apollo bike which requires new front forks aswell so can do either or..
My fitness level is terrible, I want to be able to ride to work on a morning and just generally lose weight and think bike riding is the way forward for me.

I would agree with that about not getting the most expensive bike. as you would be scared to damage it. would just sit in the shed. also some expensive bikes are a bit to extreme for a new MTBer. for instance a long travel down hill bike is a bit heavy for all round use.
I would recommend that you get out every day. Even if its just for 30 minutes round town. Makes biking a thing you do all the time. Instead of some masochistic session climbing the biggest hills that are there. you'd maybe do that twice then give up.
I'm building a single speed racer. Just been polishing the cranks for it. Its just a jet about bike. Might put a thread about it.

Just ride it as often as possible pal! that way youll get fitter without noticing.....if you get a better bike, just try and get something lighter....that way your pedalling will become more efficient and you will go further easier!
Trust me when I recommend a single speed as they are incredibly efficient and you get more out of them from what you put in ( also they are cheap to build and generally lighter due to not having loads of rings and gear mechs on them! )

I ride a fair bit, and a hardtail is the best place to start with - infact i've had a couple of posh full sus's and moved back to hardtail recently as I find it suits my riding style better. The hardtail will be miles better than the full sus apollo thing. If anything a fully rigid bike is the best bike to start propoer off-roading on as you learn to read the trails better. Singlespeeds are good, but if your new to riding then I wouldn't recommend it at first - its not just pure leg power, you also need to be able to sustain that leg power and enchance your technical skills - over bumpy/rocky pedally trails they can be a bit of a mare. They are awesome though once you have got your head round riding offroad. I'm currently speccing a new one :-) If you were down south i'd take you out for a spin :-) This is at the top of Whites Level, at Afan Argoed:

Can you upgrade mountain bikes?? Of course you can upgrade everything on them, but to be honest a quick scan of ebay and you might find that you can buy a complete better bike for the cost of a few upgrades!
