Here's my toy: A 1988 (but registered on a '93 L) Yamaha SRX-6 1JK grey import. It's my third SRX, the first being a 400 a few years ago. I've had this one for about 4 or 5 years now, and it took a lot of hunting to find a good one as they're not very common. This is how it looked when I bought it: It's a proper bike: 608cc single, kickstart only, dry sump, twin carbs and twin downpipes, etc. They push out around 42bhp as stock. But my one's not stock any more. It's Dynojetted, with seperate K&N's, a full Predator stainless system, billet rearsets off a Japanese racebike, mini indicators, etc, and I reckon it pushes out a little under 60bhp - more than enough in something this small and flickable And the straight through exhaust is as loud as hell - pops on the overrun, and you can set car alarms off when you kick it over ;D Unfortunately, I've no recent pictures of it, and it's off the road due to a pinhole in the fueltank

The wheels will stay as is - nice narrow BT45's (90/90H18 & 110/80H18) - anything wider and the sweet handling suffers. Forks will get a thorough rebuild one day, though nothing really needs any attention at the moment.

Well, the ZX-7R was a bit of a dead end - spent ages building it up, then found it's too small for me . But... I may have found the perfect commuter: going to look at (and probably buy) a 'well used' H reg Yamaha XJ600 tonight Fingers crossed...

And here's the latest 'ricycle': It's pretty much in the condition it looks in the photos - not brilliant, but perfectly sufficient. SORN at the moment, but with 8 months MOT. Not ridden it yet, obviously, and it's still sat on the trailer attached to the back of the car outside my office as I couldn't be bothered to unload when I got home at midnight ;D. Need to have a look at the collector as there's a blow in the system (might need a bit of welding), but everything works (the horn's a bit 'hit and miss') and nothing's hanging off. That should do for a sensible commuter...

My ex girlfreind got a XJ600. Her new man got an FJ1200. She paid for both of them. As her new man is a sponging dead beat. My brothers got a more modern XJ900.

I have to say that the SRX-6 is a very sexy beast. I don't know that much about bikes, but I would think it would have to be one of the last sports bikes with such a pure, stripped-down philosophy, particularly in regards to kick-starting a 600cc roadbike! People expect electric start even on 250cc dirt bikes these days, just shows that modern society is getting lazy!

Must admit I love the look of the SRXs, but kick-start only puts me off... Being an 8-stone weakling I'd be embarrassed if the thing fired me 7 feet in the air in the works car park when trying to start it. ;D Very tempted by an XJ600 too, that one looks great!

It's my third one (well the first was only a 400), and I've got a complete '87 UK spec bike for spares now too. The black one is a J import - built in '88, but registered on a '93 L. It's probably the last proper cafe racer ever on general sale new - kind of like a DBD34 Goldstar for the eighties (only with a bit more power, and a bit more reliable). I do like a bike where you have to plan ahead - you need to think three corners in advance to maintain a high average speed...

Don't be scared - with a free flowing exhaust like my Predator, it's pretty easy to kick over... And the XJ is just a little bit 'MadMax', according to someone at work... ;D

Bit of an update. The XJ, although in more or less daily use and proving perfectly reliable (and comfortable with my newly fitted heated grips ;D), I thought I'd give it a little makeover, so it's now in bits. It's a shonky old shed, and a little bit MadMax, so a little drop of Nato green is going a long way. Nice and thick in places, and I think there'll be plenty of brushmarks showing on the tank 'coz that's three layers thick for longevity! The brushmarks add to the generally shonky appearance - can't have it looking too tidy . Once the green's dry, it'll be getting a nice set of fighter plane style gnashers on the fairing, a white star either side of the tank, and maybe a little lettering on the bellypan and sidepanels (if I can think of something to write on it!). And there'll be an RR sticker on the screen...

PICS!
is "recycled sports bike" to long to fit on the side panels?

Pics to follow when it's back together, but I was thinking 'TRACTION MAN' on the sidepanels...

if your going to put the word traction on it, it needs knobblies on it for the full mad max effect.

That's better! Well I like it, anyway Excuse the wife's dodgy photography - she's never used my camera before and struggles with even a point and shoot!
