Why spend £3000 on a car, when in the current financial climate you don't know whats around the corner. Instead it might be worth looking at a Peugeot 405 diesel estate with the 1.9TD engine. You should be able to get a really good one for a maximum of £700, and then you have a powerful diesel thats excellent on fuel and its retro too ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Fuel economy of the Fiesta TDCi doesn't sound too great, pandaselecta's suggestion above will do that easily. Even in quick-ish country driving mine does 47MPG

I'd like to pop a hand up for a late-model Xantia HDi estate. The same great engine as the 406, but with added reliability, added ride comfort, added interest (it goes up and down for goodness sake!), and better value for money (loads of toys, and they can be had for no cash at all). Ignore the horror stories about hydropneumatic suspension, find a good one that's been maintained as it should have been, and laugh all the way to 300k + miles. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Failing that, I'd go with either the Omega DTi estate, a Bimmer 5-Series, or a Mk3 Mondeo, with a common rail engine. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I'd go for a Mondeo or Omega, unless I got tempted by a 75 first...

Yuck! Ford CAN NOT do diesels. Horrible things. My daily is an early mk3 mondeo with the tddi tranny diesel in, still returns 60mpg and has now topped 273k miles, only work I do to it is change the oil and filter every 5000 miles.

Alfa 156 JTD. Its a terrible idea, of course, but who cares when it looks THAT tasty? ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) In all seriousness, the old PSA diesels are a bit lumpy by modern standards but tough - worth a look if you can find a car that isn't about to fall away around it. A mate's got a 306DTurbo, and its quite nice. Rover 75's are nice, but isn't the diesel the BMW 2.0, which has some reliability issues to do with some emissions gubbins being plastic and shattering? Omegas are rather nice for something so bargainous, but I've never been in a diesel one to judge. Volvo V40s are a good car, if a little on the dull side but again, I can't really judge the diesel one.

My old man's just got a 2001 Vauxhall Omega. Helluva lotta car for the money, really nice smooth ride and plenty of toys. The diesels are BMW engined, same 2.5 as found in the e34 and e36 - good engines. His is a petrol saloon, so dunno what the estates are like but I'd imagine they'd be cavernous! Oh, and RWD too! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

i'd go with the B5 Passat 1.9 if economy was the main factor, otherwise i'd be looking at a 2.5 A6 or an E39 530. I think the late B5 Passats were available as the 2.5 tdi too but they'll be out of your budget if you can find one.

I've a Mondeo TDCI 130 Estate. It does everything well. Quick enough (but definitely not *fast*, no matter what some people say & neither is a 110 TDI A4), handles very well, big boot, comfy reasonably economical 50mpg at 70mph in summer.
Fingers crossed the fuel system doesn't destroy itself whilst I own it.
An older, more agrciultural TDDI could be a good buy.

OK. I think we are down to three contenders (cars of appropriate age, cost and milage) so any comments on these:
Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130. Around £2400 with 110,000 miles Rover 75 2.0 D around £2700 with 75,000 miles Saab 9-5 v6 TiD with 50,000 miles for £2800
Vectra just a smidge too pricey for the early current shapers. I like the Ford for the fordness and general air of being pretty good at everything. The rover for value but it's a bit of a duffers car the SAAB for style.

Passat, Octavia or A4.......surely everyone knows they make the best sense? I was at the auction just before chrimbo.....'03 2.5TDi Passat Estate, 120k, history, nice metallic red, tidy nick.....£2k, and it sold......if i'd had the money i'd have had a dabble........i have a 2.5 A4 Avant which did 47mpg at 80 mph on the return journey from buying it.....300 miles, so not juicy on a run, but can get thirsty when using it a bit, but don't they all? I also run a Passat TDi 90bhp Estate to tow my catering van, main dealer px from my brothers' work.....LOADS of new stuff, wishbones, turbo....lovely car......203k miles tho, but for £700 i'll take the risk.... proper cars, that drive well and don't fall to bits ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Imho ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

and while i remember....... i have a 100bhp 1.7 Astra as a company car, it's only done 1000 miles but it's absolutely fecking garbage....... On the other hand, its' predecessor, a Vectra 1.9 120bhp impressed me no end......i caned it for 20k of it's 50k miles and it returned 46mpg and never missed a beat........i'd even go as far as recommending one, it was a 55 plate and i bet it never made £3k at auction......i miss it, how sad ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

I've had a few modern dizzles on hire in the past couple of years. Second best was the Mondeo 2.0 6-speed manual (130bhp model), the best was a Saab 9-3 1.9 auto (180bhp model).
The only downside I found driving the Mondeo is that the engine does not like being revved, its a van-like power delivery and rides on masses of torque, relatively short shifts at about 3500 rpm is the quickest way to drive it I would imagine, which is a bit dull if you are an "enthusiastic" driver.
What about a super-ugly Ford Scorpio 2.5td? Like the Omega, a lot of car for the money...
