As per title really, I'm interested in peoples experiances. The basic principal seems to be full of **WIN** in such bounty I'm amazed theres not more aussie tin on our roads already, which makes me wonder if theres bigger issues (buy the bigger issue mate) at play here... the **WIN** comes in so many flavours.... Aussie stuff is RHD Aussie stuff is compact sized Aussie stuff often uses some common euro/J components Aussie stuff looks totally "WTF?" as its seldom seen over here Aussie stuff can always be found with a V8. Even the Holden version of the Vauxhall Corsa has a V8 there* So where are they all? I presume shipping is expensive There are the usual things with duty and VAT when it gets here, but, meh... Where do you buy parts for the Aussie-specific bits? At the risk of sounding like Malcolm X (again, yawn) I had a dream. A dream in which I was hooning up Mansfield road in a black 1973 Ford LTD (the aussie version) with a 351 cleveland fed by a pair of double pumpers on a tunnel ram. Jacked up suspension and 7x14/8x15 chrome modular wheels, RWL rubber and sidewinders. I have the itch, what would it cost me to scratch and ultimately how bad an idea can this be? digiads.com.au/carsales/used-cars/USED-1973-FORD-LTD-SEDAN-CAR-FOR-SALE-BRISBANE-QLD-4507.htm#adPhotoTopthis one is $10,000 Aussie, which is £4500 GBP according to XE this morning. So that one would be a whopping £7K landed and duties paid I guess? Further research may locate a better priced example. No idea if that price is typical or expensive? Any southern hemisphere members care to comment? Anyone run an Aussie car in the UK longish term or imported one? Oh, and i will send e-herpes to anyone just posting loads of mad max pics in this thread LOL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * this may not actually be true.

I can't offer any advice with regard to importing, but do wholeheartedly agree with your reasoning. And no doubt you already have slotmags to fit. When I was over there I had lots of dirty thoughts involving containers and rot free V8 powered tin.... Have a pic from my Oz trip...

oz i think is easier for bits, and especially rust free holdens/fords. there's millions of j tin that's not rotten in oz as well. In new zealand stuff rot alot more, still not as bad as you guys are used to though.
jsut be careful though as over the years, hundreds of moron types have had the chance to bodge the curse word out of all these cars, and pu bits and pieces on them that you may find very hard to identify.

Don't know about importing (well exporting for me really) but can confirm better prices than that. This for example, not an LTD, more miles, smaller V8 but a snip at only £822. (and it already has slot mags) cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330293731024Prices generally are on the up for big Aussie cars but if you are going to the hassle/expense of importing you would surely want something as Australian as possible.

howdy, mate. my brother lives in perth and he keeps an eye out for me for any decent cars. a few months back he found me a 1 owner mk1 2 door escort which i was going to have. by the time i'd made a few calls regarding shipping it was sold! Gutted! it was totally rust free and went for about 800 quid. i'd got the shipping quotes down to about £1050 which i didn't think was bad. with the prices that escorts fetch, it still made the sums add up quite favourably. there's some strange stuff out there as well, such as four door rs2000's and 4 litre cortina's ?! made like this from the factory. then you've got all your aussie stuff with v8's. i'm not really sure why more people don't import things as they generally tend to be rust free. check out these two sites: carpoint.com.au uniquecarsales.com.au regards, carlos

cheers for those sites and the shipping price info.
I've seen a couple of the 4.1 Cortinas imported here.

I'm quite taken by this sort of thing, but holey moley, thats still near ten grand in sterling before you add shipping and taxes... This one's cheaper but still $10,990 Aus.... More like it! But still $8500.... This "lady Penelope meets Chrysler Cordoba" version seems the more common. $4800 is £2221 GBP. Says "needing minor attention to bring back to its former glory" Hmmmm.....

yeah, some of the prices are crazy, i agree. i tend to find that cars in west australia (WA) perth area, tend to be more down to earth than the rest of oz. i think its because its so cut off from the rest of australia. when i was there four years ago we went to a custom car show, and it was jaw dropping. the standard was as you'd expect from the states. my brother's just trying to negotiate an a series manta which he tells me is rust free, original and probably under £1000 so they are out there, its just finding them! good luck, with anything you do.

I know its wrong but my first thought was, you could drop a decent sized sub in there... I thought there was one already there when I first saw the thumbnail. The problem with the LTDs is there weren't that many (comparatively) in the first place and the ones that are worth buying and importing (that you can find online) are going to be the best of the best. To survive to now in that condition they have risen above rust/neglect/abuse/geriatric original owners and daylight drivetrain robbery. They are only now really being recognised as 'classic cars'* where they were once seen only as Granpa transport and donor cars. The only real big Aussie ford that the price wave hasn't caught up with yet is the XC Falcon. Its predecessor the XB fell in the last few years and prices have rocket and availability plummeted. Also have a look at ZH Fairlanes, always been my favorite and prices are still reasonable. *ie recognised as being worth something to someone and therefore ascribed any value the current owner can dream up.
