Well this'll prolly forever remain a day deam but that doesn't bother me as its cheaper. I love the look of Porsche 924's but they ain't exactly that "pokey". As far as I know the 944 is just a widebodied 924.......So if there was a donor 944 sitting next to a 924 would all the mechanicals just swap over? So that say a 5 stud turbo narrow bodied 924 with 300hp could be made?

porsche sold a 924S - a 924 with the 2.5/944 engine, so yes it all should be swappable.

Ultimate swap. 924 had an LT van engine. Soooo, drop in the six-cylinder van engine*, run it on chip fat and enjoy a Veggie Porka!
* May not actually be possible

924 turbo's have 160bhp form memory which is fairly quick i would imagine,,,,just fit all that turbo stuff to a normal 924 with a chambered head then boost it up to 200bhp and enjoy

Like has already been said, just get a 924S, as that has a Porsche 2.5 engine. But the 2.0i is cheaper to maintain plus is a non interference engine (same engine as an Audi 100).

Always prefer the 'wideboy' 944's anyway. 924's look too skinny. I do like WollyDobbler's van engine idea though. CHUG CHUG CHUG.

for the price of converting it you could pick up a 944 they are normally within ÂŁ500 of each other and it would save a lot of work, although i do understand the aim.

Audi 1.8T engine in a 924 please That's something I've wanted to do if I got round to having a 924. I also like the idea of shoving a VR6 in one.....

I had also pondered the 1.8T conversion idea and even asked PPC mag about it. From what I remember the main obstacle is getting the engine to mate to the bell housing that's cast into the end of the transmission er, thingy.
To be fair the standard engine does have a redesigned Porsche cylinder head fitted.
I'd love to have one to play with but I've already got more cars than I know what to do with.

The stock 924 gearboxes are curse word though, stick anything with much more torque than standard in there and it'll be blown to smithereens.

From what I remember the main obstacle is getting the engine to mate to the bell housing that's cast into the end of the transmission er, thingy The bellhousing attaches to the torque tube with 4 bolts (like a volvo 360), so you could put anything on there. The volvo bellhousing could fit with little work, and that opens the door to cast iron slant4 500bhp+. As for the box, it's just an audi 100 transaxle, so there must be epically strong ones from later cars.

Matt not turbo ones, they are completly different animals, more like a 265 getrag in a transaxle. I have the entire guts of a 924 turbo at work- engine, brakes, transaxle, the whole shebang

When i bought my old 924s I drove a 2.0, 2.0 turbo and the 2.5 S, best one was a late model 1989 924s , I ended up with a 86 924s as it was a far better price and had cream leather.
The turbo 2.0 was a dog to drive, and the 2.0 was just a bit slow for the way it looked.
Rather than swap all the running grear from a 944 turbo, just swap the external body panels for those on a 924 far easier.
