Mebbe a bit O/T, (is a 1997 seat ibita TDi retro yet?) but while trying to reset a service light today foday I found that you can play wierd tricks with the odometer. Basically, it changes from reading miles/trip to one of 8 readouts, none of which explain themselves.... modes 1 to 4 I have no idea, no5 self tests the display, 6 records the distance travelled, forwards or backwards, in meters 7 is a digital revcounter (even though the car has a revcounter) and 8 is a trip indicator in km Anyone else found this? Do other VAG cars have this mode? WTF is the meters one about? (in case you have one and want to play, press and hold the trip reset button, then turn the ignition on off on, then release button. odometer will read "1" then a value, subsequent presses cycle through the modes. Goes back to normal when you turn it off)

Lots of VAGmobiles do stuff like this - cars with Climatronic are even better

Yep - my mk2 GTI has something similar. I get different readings depending on whether the MFA is set to 1 or 2. There's a digital rev counter, manifold vacuum and a few others which I can't quite remember.

There's one on modern fords (mine was 2000) which will do all sorts, will even test if one cylinder is down on power by cutting the spark to each in turn! Gives a cool rpm readout on the LCD too.

Heralds have a hidden mode too. Exceed 50mph and the speedometer enters 50-70-50-70-50-70-50-70 mode.

Not boverred unless its Revs or Elite. damn, I used to love "elite" the horror of discovering that after "harmless" you progress to "mostly harmless" Hell, at least dodging pirates and missiles would make the hugely long journeys enjoyable, and an autopilot that tried to park in our garage via the garden would be good too. Mr weasel sir....I did some (haphazard) internet reseach, it suggests that L+R+b+b+a+start will give me an indestructable car and immunity from police, can you confirm this before I start? I have been asked to recover a package from the other side of a big city, and I only have 4 minutes......

On modern BMWs you can check the production date and look up the VIN to make sure your speedometer has not been swapped with a lower mileage one.
My old Mini had a G-meter built into its speedo. If you nailed it round a bend fast enough the oil light would show just before it started to slide!
