Streching rubber should make the car handle more positivly up to a point. Think about the direction that the forces travel in duing cornering, its close to gettin more negative camber. but pulling the tryes away from the beads cant be that good as the bead needs support. With streched tyres there will be less sidewall roll, if any as long as the tyre can be kept on the rim.

The only problem I have with stretched rubber on rims is that I don't have any 8" fronts and 10" rears to stretch the rubber onto... woe is me.

So is anyone gonna get someone who knows to give an opinion or have you all just gravitated back to stretched rubber must = good? As rmad said, the point is not whether you think it looks good, the point is - is it safe to do this if you want to?

That Doive bloke knows all about how-not-to-modify. www.chevettes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9105"1) A steering rack will have been designed with a particular application in mind and certain loading forces over its whole length. When you cut it the whole force is now acting over a much shorter length, so reducing the 'steeringness' of the rack. Its likely to snap or fail, and may just change the handling. " "2) If you add a few milion too much from any one side, the car may tumble over." Agree!

Would you mind not mentioning your age again though?...it's a little too scary for me to think I'm over ten years older than you! ;D Cripes that's old! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Whilst we're on the subject of stretched rubber have you got those rims on yet? If not hurry up, fit tyres, take some photos, take your car for a slide round a few corners and come back tell us how they work. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Edit... I meant to add that an ebay purchase recently took me to the house of a guy with a fairly solid chevette shell soon to be fitted with a fiat tin can. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

does anyone have any concrete proof that the people with stretched tyres actually drive them like that? we only see a picture of the car and go oooh, then assume they must be driven. maybe they are only fitted once at the show, meet or whatever. if its unsafe, which some seriously are, surely its only a "wow" factor thing, because who in their right mind would put a car thats obviosly has had a lot of time, effort and cash put into it, into a situation where it could get buggered.or worse still, cause loss of life. i certainly wouldnt. i do think it looks cool though.

You're the one who was complaining about hostile attitudes. Did you notice the tone of that last message? Anyway, as it happens I have been looking for someone with real experience on this matter actually, even though I'm not even a big fan fo tyre stretching or the Euro look, it's alright but it's not my thing, so really it's no big thing to me if it's safe or not, it's you lot who're concerned, so if any of you are unhappy with the answers I come up with when I get some answers back, please direct your strop, cattiness and sarcasm elsewhere, because I don't intend to take any of it.

Now hold on just a minute! You're the one who was complaining about hostile attitudes. Did you notice the tone of that last message? The message doesn't have a tone - it was typed, not spoken! I am just quite interested to know if you really can do this or not and if so why - that's all. I have the oddest feeling that the actual answer will be 'it's ok to a certain extent' which probably won't satisfy anyone but ho-hum. After these 100 odd posts and a few harsh words being written it would be nice to think that the culmination to all this will be the resolution of the issue. Then such disagreements won't be able to happen anymore!

I can't help thinking that a man who lives is 'Stretchford' might be a little biased on this issue!

right lets just clear this up, cars i know that run stretched rubber...driftcars, since stretched rubber reduces sidewall flex when going sideways.. drift cars get driven very hard on track and on the road to, no tyres have slipped off rims or anything .... so lets end that here no more whining.

They say every picture tells a story: ![](http://img155.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/0/2/8/4/starfive_520-img600x450-1117095448ma-ku3-12j.jpg) Now that's race rubber...and it's stretched. Does this back up the drift/less sidewall movement theory? Could it also be where the look originated?

To be honest they don't look as if they've been stretched that much to me - they look a lot more like they've been designed to have a curved sidewall like that. I'm sure I've seen oval racing rubber that looks pretty similar too.
