Went into the dealship today to get a radio code for the wifes corsa.
saw the ECOFLEX promotion.
WTF
We will scrap your old car for you in an environmentally-responsible way and give you up to £1000 off the price of your next car providing you purchase one of our low emission vehicles listed below. How it works
* Check that your vehicle is eligible for the Scrap Allowance offer: o A passenger vehicle with a maximum of 9 seats or commercial vehicle with a maximum weight of 3.5 Tonnes. o All significant components such as engine, chassis, bodywork, catalytic converter, wheels and electronic control unit (ECU) are present in the vehicle. o There is no waste in the vehicle. o Must be legal to be driven on the highway * Purchase one of the eligible models. * Speak to the retailer about what other offers this model is eligible for. * Supply a vehicle registration document and valid MOT certificate for the vehicle to be scrapped. * Receive a contribution of up to £1000 to your new vehicle. * Vauxhall will then dispose of the vehicle in an environmentally friendly manner.
So they will knock off a grand on a car if you take them a perfectly ok and road legal car and tell them to scrap it.
What?
How is scrapping a running, complete, tax'd and MOT'd car and replacing it with a running, complete, taxed and MOT'd road legal ecologically friendly.

The idea behind it is that they are taking an old unenvironmentally friendly car off the road and replacing it with one that's kinder to the environment.
Thats why it is only available on the most economical versions of their cars with low emmissions, eg- 1.3 (75ps) Diesel and 1.0 Petrol Corsa, but not 1.2, 1.4, 1.6t Corsa. You have to have owned the car since June though, so you can't just go out and drag something out the scrapper with 3 days ticket!

You just spotted this?
It caused some outrage in the classic press, Vauxhall came back and said they weren't after classic cars, just those nasty old bangers from the 70s, 80s and early 90s....
In the US they crush some beautiful classics now in the name of ecofriendly tax breaks. Theres a website and it makes the blood steam to see the stuff that they con old people into trading in to be crushed.

The idea is that Vauxhall can con gullible knobheads into splurging 8k for some wheezing, asthmatic lump of gutless washing-machine on wheels that's cost more carbon to produce than their 'environmentally-unfriendly car' will put out in the rest of its lifetime. GM can suck my weiner, I hope they go to the wall. Rant over.

harsh.
but meh.
They were never likely to sell many cars to us anyway. Except I might have been tempted by a VXR8 if I get offered a company car again. I somehow suspect that they don;t include that as an eco-friendly option though....

I wonder why the car has to be in working order tough. If they're just gonna crush it anyway, does it really matter?

yes, I believe the car has to be a legit road going car. The spec list for the Vauxhall deal says it must be road legal. The horrible waste of rust free tin in the California website is amazing and just appauling. Stuff like Datsun 510s, Chevy Impalas, Dodge Darts, etc etc. all from the dry states. Although, I guess we say "its their car its up to them what they do with it" EDIT: I'm sure they scrap them, it says they do, its effectively a contract. As Vauxhall dealers would have to be legally responsible for any defects in any car they sell they won't sell anything themselves. Its illegal for them to sell "sold as seen" and the legislation on warranty and fault liability is even tighter now.

This isn't a new idea or one that is only Vauxhall's, somewhere in Europe does it as a national scheme and I'm pretty sure it was being touted round fairly recently as an idea by one of our political parties. It was mentioned in a Landy mag somewhere, will dig it out if I can find it.

I'd be surprised if you didn't get £1000 off a Vectra if you wandered into a Vauxhall dealership and offered a bit of belly button fluff as a trade in. It's all swings and roundabout. £1000 off for you're older cars, £1000 off for no trade in, £1000 if you take finance etc etc. It's all gone a bit eco mental on the PX front just now even for newer cars. I saw a 1999 E39 M5 with 89k and full BMW history go through the auction for £4200! that was a dealer PX. If I'd had the money together I would have had it. I didn't though so I just sulked about it for a few days.

[quote author=alistairk board=The horrible waste of rust free tin in the California website is amazing and just appauling. Stuff like Datsun 510s, Chevy Impalas, Dodge Darts, etc etc. all from the dry states.[/quote] Couple points, from someone who annually buys tons (literally) of CA and western sheetmetal: 1) The pollution credits program in CA has an "escape clause" for historically significant cars to be rescued by application of recognized car clubs. Thus, a Hemi Cuda hauled from grammy's shed will never get crushed under the program. Thousands of greedy clubbers eye the public lists and bid for the right to save the valuable cars. So it's not a complete butcher job, just a partial one. 2) Calif sheetmetal can be HUGELY rusty, especially along the coast. Salt air, wind, sand, outdoor storage = rust! Norm

AK, that 'it's their car to do what they like with' platitude does get away from the fact that it's often a bloody waste, I'm not denying that. A get out clause emphasising the 'historical significance' of any old car like in CA would be a good idea, and soften the stance of a lot of the old car movement towards the scheme. At least then the old 'condemned' car has a chance of seeing the road again! With the Vauxhall scheme, if that's the best they can do to persuade me to buy a new box of theirs, then they deserve to go down the shitter. I bet there's some con in the UK scheme whereby the MD can get a car cheap for an employee, or out the door on the QT if he \ she spies a profit in selling the thing on privately if it's suitably interesting \ tasty. If I was suitably loaded I'd buy a Prius and rock up in that, pick the most pov spec eco corsa and demand that they take the Pious in part ex and flatten it, with videos and documentary evidence. I would then give the Corsa to twigzy on the proviso that he paint it beige and rag it backwards round the nearest friendly oval on race day. I would hold the event and offer a brand new 6000 SUX running on dodo jism as the grand prize The future's large. And it better bloody well come with a Blaupunkt.

I believe this is to be rolled out natonwide here in France. I caught the end of a piece on the radio the other day mentioning 1000€ "ecology bonus" for trading in an old car against something new.
Whilst I'm a firm believer that the owners can do what they want with their old car, I'm strongly against manufacturers/government making this seem like such a good deal under the false "green" banner.

I imagine they're pushing this again because UK dealers are absolutely on their . Like has been said, it's the same as 'minimum grand part exchange' and all those other offers. I imagine in the case of that old Astra, the money grabbing sales manager figured it would make more money through the block, than to send away for crushing. If a trade in goes through the auctions, they aren't obliged to make sure the thing's roadworthy, or even safe. When I used to work in the trade we used to send some proper deathtraps off to BCA.

indeed, trade auctions are not governed by the same rules retail sales are. So while they won't sell you that Mk2 Astra off the forcourt you could buy it out of the local auction.
I believe that legally if you have said you are taking a car off someones hands to dispose of it by scrapping it and then they sell it on then they have broken a contract so I suspect that if it comes in on the scrap thing then it will go for scrap.
I remember trying to buy Singers and Humbers and the like which Swithland Motors (remember their TV adverts with Sam Fox in them?) had taken in as £1000 minimum P/Ex cars. Some loveley classics. They would not sell me one and told me they were scrap. That was in the 80s. same thing wrapped up another way.
Norm - just because a Dart is a 318 not a Hemi doesn't make it any less sad to me for it to be crushed when it could be a great project for someone. Yes, I have a California "rust free" car here at home with a huge rust hole in the floor pan but its still far better than a 1968 car from say Michigan or Nottingham would be. They had photos and they had a list of the crushed cars. Some of which look pretty OK. There were 60s Catalinas, Bonnevilles, Impalas and all sorts of cool stuff on the previously-crushed list. Its a total waste of useable restorable cars (or donor trim and panels) and the eco-arguement is pretty null.
I read somewhere a questionable stat which said a 1967 Anglia 105E makes same c02 as a 2007 Ford Focus does. I'd like to know the background to that statement and if its anything like true.
