I notice they didn't mangle the mk2 'tina, which most people consider (or did at some point) as old curse word. Whats the difference? It was only slightly faster than the dog in that drag race Big wows at that German Caterham thing which "only weighs 1000kg" More than the Marina or Lada, and they have doors, 4 seats, a roof, windows (that may or may not wind up) etc

I enjoyed watching it last night, fair enough, the burning out of the marina was a bit un-necessary, but if you're that worried about a cars future, don't sell it!

I enjoyed watching it last night, fair enough, the burning out of the marina was a bit unnecessary, but if you're that worried about a cars future, don't sell it! Totally agree. You sell it that's it. Whether it gets driven and adored, written off in a RTA, stolen or stored for 30 years until it's worth money is not important. It's the new owners choice. The fact is that it raised the profile of retros more than BL's original advertising campain ever could (or did). One more thing, no-one's mentioed all the 2.8 Grandads, Mk1 & 2 Jags and other "sturdy" cars that get reduced to scrap metal every weekend in the name of bomber car racing. Are we going to have this conversation in 30 years time when someone wants to de-chav a Saxo or Seat Ibeeezaaar cos it's not original / modified to the noughties spec? ;D

MWF! If you find the destruction of nice old motors amusing you don't deserve to be allowed on the forum! Shame on you! Meh don't be such a big girl, it's just a hunk of metal. I hope someone buys the burn out shell and turns it into a Donk.

How come no-one mentioned the Polonez pick-up. In terms of rarity, that must be about the rarest thing they've ever trashed. I can't remember the last standard Polonez I've seen in the wild (I used to own one) and I've certainly never, ever seen a pick-up before, not even on TV...

It's funny how people say "it's awful that car was sold, and look what's happened to it." I don't recall buyers queueing at our door when we trying to sell the 1.3 Ital we owned for a short while. And that's hardly surprising, because it was dreadful: made the Mark Five Cortina we had at the time seem like a new Daimler Super Eight.....

Anyone complained about the Dukes of Hazzard and the hundreds of 68' Chargers they destroyed filming that series maybe we should start on that....... But, how old were '68 chargers when they were producing the series? 10, maybe 15years old -- just old bangers to most folks niot classics. What are Marinas to Joe Public? Decrepit old snotters that should have been wiped out with Communism and The Berlin Wall, that's what. And it's true! That's why we love them on RR. Joe Public doesn't frequent Retro-Rides because he/she has no interest in cars whatsoever, drives a Vauxhall Zafira bought on the nevernever from TossCarCredit, thinks that NCAP Ratings are the most important thing since sliced bread........ ..........and THAT'S Top Gear's target audience. Not us. C'mon guys, week in, week out. It's getting boring. Don't like it? Don't watch it. ;D

What a geezer. No upsetting people is not fine, not fine at all. But getting upset about Top Gear legally purchasing an old car and doing what they want with it is not fine either, that's just not normal in the head. It's not like May and Clarkson proceeding to beat someones nan to death using kittens as bats live on air.

It's not like May and Clarkson proceeding to beat someones nan to death using kittens as bats live on air. now THAT would make good TV! I digress. I was genuinely a bit disappointed when they knocked seven shades of curse word out of the Marina, they aren't my favourite car but it does seem a waste to make such a mess of it. In my eyes destroying the car didn't make the segment appreciably better, and burning it at the end rubbed salt in the wounds. What we must remember is that Top Gear had to try and appeal to the general public, who are all Idiots and enjoy any sort of mindless destruction. We are just weirdos who inexplicably like curse word cars.

I have a similar dillema myself, i bought the merc lowrider with the intention of nicking the hydraulics off it for my coupe, turns out the car has an interesting history and was built by someone i know and is in pretty good condition, all reasons not to take it apart, but i still really want to as i prefer the coupe. Anyone want to swop it on an airbag job for the coupe?

You know what I find amusing about Top Gear? .. nothing, so I don't watch it, regardless of if they are smashing up old cars or racing supercars.
More troubling is the "Classic Car" program I saw on Men and Motors that had a really snide piece about people considering "normal" cars like Marinas as "Classic", they scoffed and they filmed people laughing at the cars at the NEC Classic show thing. That is the bigger enemy to these sort of cars than one being destroyed by Clarkson and co...

Graham And they didn't even do anything interesting with it, just dropped it off a crane. The bus racing segment was waaay better than this, although it was good to see James giving it some stick, it was just a lame two car banger race. That bus racing had some really high quality filming and editing, and the guy driving the white single decker was mental Bus drifting ftw And you've kept quiet about the demise of your one familiy from new seven-year old FSO

I don't wanna see a Marina get burned on teevee, so i don't watch top gear.
What I would say, is these Marina boys really ought to chill out a bit, I can imagine Clarkson + co would find it highly amusing to read out some of their foaming-at-the-mouth internet rants on TG! Even i would probably chuckle a bit if I saw that happening, even though i am unhappy about them wrecking a Marina because I LOVE MARINAS.

While I'm not about to lose it completely over this (like some Marina owners might), I still think they can come up with better ideas to provide entertainment than torching a good example of a now rare car (and yes I didn't like what they did to the FSOI either). Actually it would've been more entertaining if they'd wrecked a real snotter of a Marina, with no syncro and the likelyhood of a front trunnion letting go.
