From 'Revs', issue 2. I'd been doing a shedload of part-time work that summer, when I was really supposed to be doing something 'academic'. Most of my mates were already in work and starting to climb the pole of car ownership, getting 'good stuff' as opposed to hand-be-downs and £100 dross. I needed some decent wheels! And retro ones at that. I had nearly £2000 in the saved in the bank. I wanted that white escort, and wanted it HARD. Enquiries showed there was room to manoever on the price, so all told I was going to be about £200 short. I begged and begged and begged my olds to lend me the money (being too young to borrow from the bank or on credz). But they said NO NO NO NO! Save the money for university they said. Gutted I was. Absolutely bloody gutted. And of course by the time several years later I could think about such cars again, they were three times that price. Ahh, what might have been.

Ah the eternal problem with life - being just that little bit short to afford that car/upgrade/computer/house/coat/call girl/business opportunity* Don't look back at it you just end up annoyed/disappointed/depressed/doing complicated financial calculations about the money you haven't made* *delete as appropriate

Meh. T'was probably a knacker that would have gone horribly wrong and cost a bomb to fix.
Well, best way to think about it anyway!

'96 was not a good year on a personal note and I was busy flunking the 2nd year of my degree as a result. In between times I did this though Pog, that scan shows that Mk1 Escorts weren't always bargain basement even back then. Sure you could pick up a bad one for under a grand but 2.5k wasn't exactly a cheap car back then.

I had a MK1 Escort in 1996. I'd paid £150 for it a year earlier and ended up scrapping it a year later. Complete lack of boot floor and rear chassis legs. Made my money back on the rear seat and the gearbox

Technically, this photo was taken in 1997, but it wasn't long after New Year, and I bought this car, my first 2CV, in 1996! Since then, I chopped all of my hair off and have since grown it back. Useful insulation this time of year! I've owned something like 16 2CVs (or derivatives) since then...

I havn't had a mk1 or mk2 escort since about 1990. In 1996 I had 2 kids under 10 and a green 12 year old Montego estate. Seems wierd that that's 12 years ago already

You're making me feel old.
I turned 32 in 1996, got married, bought this place (and sold my beloved '75 Lightweight Land-Rover to do it....it wasn't all bad, i bought another one the following year) and had an absolutely MINT '86 Sierra 2-litre Ghia as a daily.
All that, plus I weighed about 3 stone less and had hair down to my man-boobs. What an Adonis, no wonder the missus wanted to marry me. ;D

Mmmm, 1996, still at college and I bought my first project (the Opel I still own!) and despite it having a years ticket it was in pieces less than 24 hours after I'd bought it ;D I did at least have some impressive wheels to tide me over; 1983 1.0 Metro in gloss black, silver Weller 8's with MG rear spoiler and interior Strangely, unlike the Escorts this was worth sod all back then, and would still be worth sod all if I still had it

In 1996 I was 7! Car wise, I think my dad had a Volvo 850 T5 (which I had somehow got into my head was a supercar in disguise thanks to the lovely noise it made ) and my mum had a nasty green MG metro......
