Another one that's not new but thought I'd have a go. I saw something very simmilar on a trendy products web site and though I'd love one of them - but not at that price. So I've made one. Take one USB memory stick with a broken case and some Lego. Hollow out the lego brick and trim the plate to fit in the bottom. Apply some epoxy resin, press it all togetherand teach some electronics for a bit. See how its still a lego brick!

I thought "Hey that's cool" when I saw it in Retro cars. Then I thought "Hey that would take no time at all to lose in a toy strewn flat, part occupied by a three year old" Nice homework as ever Mark. Now make one out of Meccano!

I did wonder when I saw these in RC whether someone would make their own and then 2 days later this thread appears. Nicely done Mark. Wonder if there's a market for these on evilbay?

Cheers for yer nice comments guys. ^^Its so that kids don't have to imagine that their red/yellow/blue/black trees are realistic. Matt I've been taking more of an interest in Lego kits in the stores recently (though I've got quite a while to wait befor i can start buying them for the boy), and you're absolutely right, so much less imagination is needed. There seems to be so many parts designed for that specific model with no way to use them for anything else, and fewer parts per model. I can remember actually buying or getting bought models that i wasn't particuarly interested in because I'd already started planning what i could do with the parts in that kit, Particuarly if it had cool wheels. I suppose its making the lego more of an instant entertainment fix, competing with the electronic gizmos and the like. I get kids comming to afterschool clubs and see in lesson that they just cant follow or don't have the confidence to follow written or picture stem by step instructions and I think it's because they don't get the practice anymore.

Agree totally with the former, and find the latter very disappointing... Can't wait 'til Christmas 'cos I know how much Lego my 4-year-olds have got ;D Having said that, I will only be 'overseeing' as even on their 4th birthday they could build sets by following the piccies.

Great invention.
I agree that lego is too specific now, I was looking at some for my lad for Xmas, but you can build what's on the box then that's that. Not very good. I still feel a bit 'funny' when I hear that 'swooshing' sound that lego makes as you churn it round in the box lloking for a yellow 'two-er'.
Do lego competitions still exist? I won a lego competition, actually I won two, prizes were always MOAR LEGO. Happy days.

Buy it anyway for him anyway - still hours of fun for everybody. To be honest I think Lego have realised their mistake, 'cos now you can get 'builder' sets that have lots of generic bricks, wheels, glass, propellers, etc Luckily I kept all my lego from the '70s and '80s... in fact we may have too much in some ways 'cos you have to cover the entire floor of the playroom just to find anything. Errr, I mean the kids do Hmmm... going way O/T, sorry

I've still got all my old lego. Probably a few half built lego "inventions" up there too.

i still have a pair of lego chevy vans and a mack truck that i built out of generic bits and some bits that weren't for truck buildong. i designed my own coupling system that was both realistic and functional on the truck, and rigged bits for towbars on the vans. They are still a damn sight better than the off-the-shelf bits you can buy now to make the same idea. my sister turned 7 in september and me and the wife got her one of those huge old-fashioned type houses to build. about 75% done now, teaching her "3 dots" "4 dots" "4 long" etc and getting her to read the pics... she might be doing it a bit wrong but it's very good for her introduction to a full kit and kudos to you Mark. proper tasty that.
