I'm not sure I agree about Olympus being better made. I've not used a modern one mind you. I have an OM10 though which is a pretty good camera. I don't see Canon & Nikon as being so successful because of any kind of fashion. They are just consistently the best widely available cameras in the price range with enough history to support that. The bottom-range Nikon and Canon DSLRs are plasticky as anything, really shoddy. Even the boggo Olympus which I have feels like it's much better built. I've dropped it heavily twice on a granite slab (lens-first), and on the floor of a ferry. Both times it was barely scratched.

I'm a Fuji fan. I've used a now-elderly Fuji 3Mp compact for years and have been rather impressed with the bigger Fujis I've seen in the hands of others. In particular their bridge cameras, S5600 and S5700 seem very capable and not too expensive.

Nikon D40x: don't think you could go wrong with any of the Nikon/Cannon/Olympus DSLR's really.

As a semi pro photographer imho its best not to get too obsessed with the equipment you use just let the results speak for themselves. I have a very expensive Canon SLR but mostly use my little canon power shot s1 is, by the way the G9 has a good reputation too. I am very impressed with Brian damageds little Panasonic as I said the results speak for themselves. Just another little tip, the first rule of landscape photography is to keep the horizon straight.........whacky angles don,t really work on landscapes.

I picked up a Canon PowerShot S5 IS earlier this year, and while I do like it, I am finding that the good iso range is really limited. Useable range I feel for clean pics is 80-200. And 200 is verging on noise/grain. This is problematic when....well, a lot of photography to be taken out here is under dark, dreary overcast days, and fog to the mix.... (A lot like Britain?). Like this for example: Had to use ISO 200. Comes out...unclear. I sort of think that part of it is because of the camera's jpg compression, even though I do have it set at the highest quality. Get it into its good ranges though, and this camera is great. Really blew my mind when I snapped a few of these: s21.photobucket.com/albums/b271/dposcuro/?action=view¤t=IMG_0776_1024x575.jpg

BTW if you have a Canon 300 you can hack it to give you more advanced features. Google it. you can do that on olympus' fourthirds camreas, ammount of hacks depend on the firmware I have an E-500 and I wouldn't be without it! I love it! on firmware 1.0 so plenty of hacking can be done, the usual ones are ISO50 or ISO3200. I still haven't tried it yet mind thats (a rubbish shot with my fuji s5600 ) with a OM mount adapter and OM fit miranda 28-70mm lens, but as its a film lens you multiply the focal length by 1.6 to get the "real" length. I love this lens and the best bit? it cost £4 I also have a sigma 70-200 OM lens, cost a fiver standard 4/3 lenses are great too, but the 14-42 kit lens is rubbish at manual focus. lovely shot and being 14mm its nice and wide without being too fisheye. the 40-140 kit lens is all round great. all these are straight off the camera, no processing just resized. 40-140 kit lens 14-42 kit lens miranda OM 28-70 lens sigma OM 70-200 lens

Well screw the recession, I've just taken the plunge and splurged just over £200 on a Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens, looking forward to getting out there and using it now, hopefully it will spur me on to better levels of compositional ability and creativity. Still won't be anywhere without my trusty little Lumix though.

My other half has brought this Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ-28 for me , Unfortunatley I havent been able to play with it yet as she says I cant have it until xmas!!! Being my 1st proper camera I chose this one due to the fact it has really good optical zoom, and really good allrounder with a 5 star rating from Digital Camera Buyer magazine and many others. Also a freind of mine had the DMC FZ8 which has a lower optical zoom, but I was still really impressed with the quality of the pics. I would of liked to go for a DSLR but they were a bit out of my price range new, and I didnt think I would use it properly anyway? But I'm happy with an in betweener for now

Brian, I expect you might get frustrated with the relatively limited zoom range you've got on that compared to the compact especially if you wanted to take any moving race shots of any sort. Would be worth finidng out what 35mm camera lenses can be used on that bod (assuming there are some) and pick up a longer lens cheap that way Looking forward to '09 BD show pics though!

Well apparently all old Nikon-fit lenses are OK, the one thing they obviously lack is the ability to auto-focus.....so focussing manually is another skill I'll have to master if I start buying older lenses etc. Not that I mind, it's all part of the fun. Tripod and some filters first, though!!! Job One (hopefully over the Christmas break depending on the weather) is Mr & Mrs.Phenomenator and his Poncho Wagon/her A55 sled, I'm going to try my hand at doing a decentish-quality photoshoot.

you'll get adapters to run most things, have a looky. i run old M42 pentax lenses (and carl ziess etc) which are a fraction of the cost. i paid £15 for my F1.8, the equivalent EF/S mounted lens in metal mount is over £100! 7 times the price for auto focus, and half the quality.
