As a few guys have said, just run it on unleaded anyway . We had a MkIV XR3i '89 spec which was registered in 10/1988. That ran fine for 50,000 miles on unleaded, and again I bought another Cabriolet last year (but this was made in early '89) and that was fine. The early one *may* have been an earlier engine (the later one I had did contain some later bits, like a different crank pulley for the timing belt (lipped) for one), but both ran fine. However, I would try to stick to Super Unleaded if I were you, as I found that both of them felt a little 'flat' on 95 RON, not that they were gutless with it (I actually remember worrying a mate in his MkIV Golf V6 4 Motion down a mile straight ).
As BenzBoy said, just put in 4 Star from the nearest pump near you in every now and again. But it is not cheap in the slightly (try £1.25 a litre from a local garage near me).
