Hi there, I am a final year Product Design student at the university of Brighton in England. I hope you don't mind but I have started this thread to get some oppinion on two lights I have made from old Jaguar Pistons/ ConRods. I have my project presentation on Tuesday and it would be great to hear what people think.

Thanks for your feedback! I think the second one doesnt photograph as well, the wood in the front has a lovelly colour which works a bit better than the picture suggests.

I prefer the one with the single conrod base. have you figured out mounting for them? I imagine they are fairly heavy and may need some careful consideration if wall/ceiling mounting into plasterboard

there cool. if they are a bit heavy you could maybe use some titanium conrods. as race teams might damage them and they would be of no use to them.

Yes they are a little on the heavy side however they seem to hold fine with plaster screws. I have some more modern pistons at home which are a lot lighter, I think I will try and do something with these.
The single con rod lamp was made as the primary product however the second was made to show the use of a touch sensitive light module. When touched this lamp turns on and off and when held it dims up and down.
At university we have to talk about the emotions the product evokes. What do you guys think?

These are great, they have an obvious solidity born from the pre-populated knowledge we all have about engine parts. The feeling is that they would be robust, and long lasting, yet the light softens the hard mechanical reality.
Are they laquered? The fact that you have resisted the temptation to polish or paint them adds to the overall appeal. I'd love one on my desk.
If you ever want them photographed, PM me.

Let me know if you ever produce a small batch of them. I would buy the desk lamp for certain.
Reminding me of my car when I have to do grimmest work is a fabulous bit of diversion neatly embodied in the function of the lamp.
Boss.

Good work there heidi. I do like an industrially inspired product design, and the way that these tie in with a re-use rather than disposable or recycling type idea makes them even better. I think both could do with a base if used as a table lamp, a flywheel, brake disk or drum would look ace (mini ones would probably be the right sort of size). Lamp no1 with the light insert from lamp no1 would be great. I think with things like this its the history of the parts that has a massive effect on their emotional impact, parts from a rollsroyce merlin areo engine have a very different emotional impact to the equivalent parts from a yugo 45. The use of the jaguar parts in your case is ideal. Here's some engine part products i made a while back, I studied teaching with design and technology up at falmer campus. Brighton is an awsome city to get inspired in. The mrs and I are heading over to the city next weekend for some christmas shopping. Good luck tuesday.

Great idea. I think little pistons and conrods out of old strimmers and chain saws would be good too. You could mount a row of them on a bar (vert or horiz) that's just slightly smaller than the crank bearing diameter. Loosen them a bit to adjust the angles and then tighten them up. LEDs or little halogen bulbs. Actually, eight of them clamped up in a V8 arrangement would be cool.

I should beable to get hold of scrap conrods, pistons, cranks, cams, valves e.t.c from the garage that works on our trucks. Being truck conponents they're all huge! Theres a scrap pile out the back with loads of them. Any use to any budding artists here?
