hey ho, last weekend = no chance to work on the car, and after a very relaxing week on a training i had a lot of things to do at the weekend.... i really have to hurry now, as the car must be finished in three weeks time (and i want to drive the car a couple of days before we take it to norway....); as the doors are still in the paint shop , i did everything else i could do without the doors ; don't laugh, but i am probably the only one here that does an brake-downgrade; i don't need vented drilled disks on this car, factorywise it has solid discs.... it's not for the race track, it'll be a daily driver..... i wanted to change the brake hoses, too, but that was impossible without killing the brake lines; so i'll just wait, what the TÜV man says.... i changed the brake fluid with my easybleed, fantastic invention.... no award winning welding here, but it's solid and noone can see it later, so a quick job was ok... looks ok for me ;D stone chip was sprayed later, so the shock absorber can go in next week.... next thing was the cam belt; normally an easy job, but with power steering and aircon some more belts there.... you can see, that it was not designed for aircon, so a lot of nuts and bolts had to be removed... clever design, the Passats with aircon have a double fan, which is belt driven.... and finally some new rubber was fitted..... so hopefully the doors will be finished next weekend, i want to have this car finished....

Why do you find all the rust on your cars? Like the Kamei-spoiler, but you should fit it with more than only the gaffa-tape...

And time for the usual sunday update : sprayed some Schutz in the inner arch; the shock is also back in again... picked up the doors from the paint shop, i am very happy with the result .... panel gaps are ok, this was a lot of work and lasted the whole day; i had to take over all the rubber stuff, window winder, glass, locks etc, this costs a lot of time... i wanted to fit the opening quarter windows but after loosing two hours trying to fit them on the drivers door i stepped back and fitted the standard ones... looking at the rubber of the quarter windows, i know they will make a lot of wind noise; and i can't decide whats more annoying; the noise of the windows or the noise from the wife on a 4.000 km trip .... when the doors were completed, i flooded them with waxoil (as you can spot on my drive now ). To-do list for the next couple of days : - fit speakers and doorcards - give it a very good clean and a T-Cut - ignition timing has to be set - fit RAID steering wheel - fit GTI stripes on the door bottoms - fit stereo - make TÜV - and then fit the brazilian taillights... - get the car registered asap - drive to norway and have loads of fun...

yesterday i took the car in for the TÜV.... i thought it would be easy, but i was wrong , here's the official to-do list :
- new shocks and dome bearings at the front - weld up left sill (haven't seen a hole in a MK.II sill ever !) - weld up filler neck - brake valve at the rear axle = dead = expensive - fuel lines at the pump and filter badly corroded (this will be the hardest thing, as they are NLA) -and some other small things...
maybe i was a bit too optimistic; the car won't be finished until next tuesday; and still then, i would be sitting in a car on wednesday and drive up 2000 kms on holiday, that would be crazy... so it's time for plan B. Actually i have no clue about plan B, but i'll have a think over the weekend...
but i am still planning to do RR09 in this car....

O Man sorry to hear it didn't get through the TUV, that's a real shame Good luck on figuring out the plan B. If you decide to be crazy and try and get it all fixed give me a call as I'm not busy tomorrow oh, thanks, didn't see that this morning, i'll come back to you... ok, after a couple of days to think I had several options : a)stay at home - no good idea b)use the Type 25 to drive to norway... c)use the Blue Passat to drive to norway, no good idea either, as it also needs TÜV, new dome bearings etc d) use the daily driver, no good idea at all, as I want to keep the miles low... so I chose e) spend the weekend and get the red Passat running.... todays a bank holiday over here, so company was closed and I had the workshop for me... started with the fuel lines; they were rusty, but not that much, that they would fail the MOT, anyway, fuel tank out, new lines in ... from factory these are metal fuel lines, which of course rust after 20 years, as the metal ones are NLA I used rubber hoses.... the rest of the metal lines were cleaned, derusted and waxoiled... then I fitted the door cards, found out, that I have to modify the doors, as the previous owner fitted huuuge speakers in the door cards and they don't fit the new doors anymore...started to remove the rust from the filler neck and found a small hole, as the tester said this could be closed without welding I used some sika and closed the whole. I'll do that properly after the holiday though... and after all that sh** I finally fitted the GL5 front spoiler (not going the KAMEI route) : looks really good... now to do on saturday : - fit new front shocks and dome bearings - brake valve at the rear has to be replaced (that thing that reduces the rear brake when the car is loaded) -fit front door cards -weld up sill -put some paint on filler neck and put it together again... and in the afternoon our detailer is coming and will polish the roof and the bonnet....

very busy today, as you can see : replaced the shocks and dome bearings.... replaced also that valve at the rear axle.... did i mention that i hate to deal with brake lines ? our detailer came around and polished it within 30 minutes.... looks like brand new, though the roof has to be polished on monday... i left the car in the company, so i had a proper workshop for me.... unfortunately if it's not yours, you don't find all the tools... i don't find them in my workshop either, but there i know where to search not necessary for the MOT, but absolutely a must for me ;D yeah, it's not a GTI , but it looks pretty cool... also i searched the hole in the sill, didn't find it almost; a very very small hole you really couldn't put the top of a small scredriver in... that was closed soon, so all the things the MOT man mentioned are done... tomorrow i'll fit the front doorpanels, do a proper service and give it a good clean.... on tuesday MOT, on wendnesday registering it and on saturday we go to norway.... hopefully, if all gets like planned... i am happy with todays result, weather should be nice tomorrow, so there will be some proper pics then....

i spend this morning a couple of hours and this is the result : back-to-blacked the bumpers and all the plastic parts... hey, looks like a new car... fitted the front doorcards, a decent Radio , changed all fluids, fitted new bulbs, wipers etc... also replaced the fuel pump because i killed it it was necessary ;D there are only some smaller things to do, but it was enough for today... things to do after MOT/TÜV : - fit brazilian taillights - fit GTI steering wheel don't need more discussions with the MOT man, but he now must be more than happy.....

Wow! I must say, that looks the absolute bees knees, the GTi stickers are a class touch. Nice one! These really are a splendid looking car, i'd love a 5-cylinder one, pretty good for towing the A-frame too I imagine.

i am really surprised, how well the GTI stickers work on this car.... and after 2,5 days i am really fed up Probably it'll have a spectacular engine failure on the way up north.... mrb: the 5pots are really the best ; unfortunately most of them have gone so far.... for towing i'd recommend the 4WD (syncro), which wasn't available in the UK obviously...
