here's my new toy : got this through the internet, as there was a report in a german classic car magazine about the weldathlon of the 78 Passat ( retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=37098). A guy from the next town read this and offered his Passat to me. When I saw the car, I realised, that this would be exactly the Variant of my dreams; subtle modded... so he changed the bumpers to the early "small" ones, changed the headlights and the grille also. Then some H&R springs and Boge shocks were fitted and all suspension bushes were replaced... also he retro-fitted a power steering, and a factory air condition (!) ... the head was skimmed and rebuilt, too. the interior is mint ... in the last 8 years a set of Recaros lived in there, which unfortunately were not part of the deal... on the downside there is a little bit to weld ... and all doors are gone, but that can be sorted easy (easy compared to the 78 Variant of course ;D ) even the brake discs have holes ;D The wheels are mint, too . Though the tyres need replacing.... this used to be "Tornado red", looks rather like "Tornado pink" now ;D . I tried to polish it with a period can of T-cut, looks promising.... Cat likes it, too ;D I am really happy , this ill be next summers ride, after sorting out the hole and the doors...

look forward to the pics just a quickie about the MK1 Passats.......how can you do a decent lowering job on them?....i've heard conflicting reports......i'd LOVE some coilies....is it possible? Ta well, coilovers are possible, but expensive, as the front struts are one part with the housing of the wheelbearings(similar to the Capri). You could use Audi 80 units at the front (though you need struts from a very early B3 Audi 80 w/o power steering), but that would be a one-off anyway. As you have no TUV in the UK you could also use one of those DIY conversion kits, where you cut the strut and weld a thread on. Or, the easiest way after cutting the factory springs, take Audi 80 lowering springs and Audi 80 shocks at the front, at the rear beetle shocks can be made to fit and Ford Sierra Cosworth springs fit.If you lower the car, take a good look at the links for the steering box at the strut; on the Mk.I Passats they just rust away ! Use a Mk.II Passat/Mk.II Audi 80 strut if you find one. But: without power steering, as the struts are different (sway bar, lower ball joint etc.).

Ah, Mauritz I presume? Isn't it the same type of suspension as on my Passat? I use Audi/Typ 81 in the front and Ford Sierra! at the rear and it works perfectly... You bring this to Norway? What about the Renault Cab, it's REALLY hot here in Norway in the sommer...

the suspension on those is different, the front is also Audi 80, but the rear is Passat Mk.2 pure, similar to the Mk.II Golf.... fortunately H&R do kits for these cars, much easier to lower..... we won't go with the Megane, i was told all norwegians have your hairstyle, so no need to travel with a hairdressers car ;D by the way, back to topic, i managed to get 4 doors for this car, the ones on the car weren't saveable; unfortunately these doors are beige, so a full repaint seems to be on the way, too I'll start doing this car as soon as i have the doors, they should come in february, too..... then it needs a bit welding, a full service and 4 new tyres... in march my tax money should come back, i try to hide it from the wife and then paint the Passat.... it'll stay red though, the majority of the cars here in the fleet seems to be red....

today just a small update; my workshop time was eaten up by time i had to work in the house; the wife wanted windows, so we had to fit windows in the roof of the house; here's my revenge : windows ;D They are a direct import from Brasil; in europe, the Mk.II Passat was only available in the first year of production with these opening quarter windows, while it was a standard thing in brasil... mine are the ones on the top, only slightly tinted.... still waiting for the doors to arrive, before i can go on with this car... but bought a lot of other stuff for the Passat (brakes, service parts etc....); and i also have a very early Kamei front splitter in the workshop, we'll see how that looks.....

speaking of brazil, i have ordered a set of those : these are the ones, that were fitted factorywise on the brazilian Passats; they are tinted and look really good on the car. Though being an OEM replacement part, they are not e-marked, what makes them not road-legal over here... the wife was speechless, when she saw the credit card receipt (she is probably right, but i just had to ;D ) also on this weekend the "new" doors arrived : actually, they are not that good as expected, but much better, than the ones on the car : a lot of missing parts could be sourced on saturday, because we took back a 1987 Passat for the scrapping scheme over here, so this car gave some important parts to this project... so next weekend the doors will be fixed, so that they can go to the paintshop, then our detailer in the company will spend a day on this car, new brakes and a set of tyres and it'll be ready for the summer soon... i also had a visitor here today : this is also a 1987, with Santana headlamps, lowered on 17s and lots of curse word on the roofrack.... actually, i like it....

today i was preparing the replacement doors; after checking the 4 doors i have received, i decided only to use 3 of them, 1 has a huge dent and the equivalent door on the car is not so bad, so that stays on. the other three doors were ok, almost: a small patch was made, the rust removed and the doors will be going to the paintshop tomorrow.... then i started looking at that KAMEI front spoiler i bought 5 years ago... hey, that looks nice... i was just trying the look, but now i'll keep that spoiler... as you can see it is cracked at the lower corner.... so i took some proper glue and some metal pieces and it was glued together.... it'll be bolted to the bumper later on, and painted afterwards, as the spoiler is flexing.... next weekend the doors will be back , the front brakes have to be replaced, all the goodies fitted, new tyres and there was a small hole at the rear....

what a fantastic weekend.... after the guy from the paint shop was laughing at me and pointing at the doors, it was time for plan B... KLE from fusseltuining.de visited me this weekend, he was picking up a scrap car from the black forest : and this car had very good doors, so a deal was done... the retrorides team was also here, Andy aka Phoenixescort gave a helping hand : after 20 minutes this was the result : by the way, Andy was here with his lovely Honda (my wife says it's a nice car but the exhaust is broken ) : haven't seen such a clean example for a while... i like the wheels... the day ended with a BBQ (as always ;D )... this morning i went in the workshop and removed everything from the doors, they go to the paint shop tomorrow, so hopefully they are back in L3Y "tornado pink" i also took off the doors from the variant to save some time for next weekend... i also took off the ATS Cups, they are getting new rubber this week, too.... they have Contis at the moment, i chose Falkens this time, cheaper and obviously also not bad... doesn't look sooo bad with the factory alloys though... you can see, that i took off some plastic on the inside, as there was a small hole in the inner arch, a common place at these cars, behind the filler neck... it's a bit tricky to weld here with the fuel tank in place and all the hoses.... doesn't look better from the inside.... the previous owner did some work here before... right after this i ran out of welding wire so i called it a day... friday is bank holiday, so i have three days to work on the car, should be enough to finish....
