Experiment is the mother of creation... or something. I think you've done pretty well taking risks so far, worst case scenario is that you'll just have to put the original dash back in. Having said that, putting a steel one in will really make the van stand out that bit more, but where to stop? Column change and bench seats would be tempting me if I were putting a metal dash in your van, but I suspect that would be a lot of work. he already has a bench seat.. this van is just epic I always look forward for more updates - cant wait to see it painted!! Thanks for the kind words steve, sad day you bailing out on B3 or even Passat world unless it's B6 going mental. Yep bench seats been in a while now ans as the car van and dash are going to be painted i think it would be rude not to get the bench recovered in some sort of vynle, just whish TMI did seat covers for Nissans but then again you never know whats out there. Today is my last day off annual leave so I'm to the my little work shop to make some mountings to hold the speedo cluster in place and listen to some fine tunes

You and Wendy going for a chevette, that might answer why you put the B3 up for sale without the cups or did they sell as one? Had another little play in this afternoon and the speedo cluster is now mounted in the dash so I can now measure how much i need to make the dash deeper so the speedo sits near as it was in the passat dash. If all works well I'm going to use 2 bay glove box lids, one for the glove box and the other for a surround for the cluster. Also need to get hold of all the vents as well as a glove box but I'm not going to spend any money until i know it all fits in place, wouldn't even getting the bay clocks to work instead of the passat ones

I love this car/van. Starting to look really good now, so what's the plan for the new colours then? Tailgate is a work of art and I'm looking forward to seeing that dash in there

Do like Beryle Green, or even keeping in Dove blue, did even think about going back to the original colour but there are to many silver cars on the road, most important thing is to get the body nice a straight as it's going to be painted i need to get the bench seat reupholstered, any recomondations

Depending on the construction of the seat you might be able to get a decent finish if you DIY it. As long as you strip everything down and keep a note of the order, you should be able to put new vinyl over the old structure or even the old fabric to give you a fresh new seat. Any decent fabric shop should be able to advise you of the best vinyl/fabric for the job.
If I knew of an upholstering service that could do it for you, I'd of course recommend that to you instead. Costs a bit more than DIY, but you get the reassurance of someone else's experience with the work.
As with the rest of the bits I've seen on this build, I'm looking forward to seeing how the dash progresses, should help me fathom what I'm planning for mine to some extent.

Thanks for all comments guys. What I'm thinking of doing with the bench is to measure one from a VW camper and if they are similar look in to buying some TMI covers. Back rest will be no problem and as long just a case of reshaping the base and adding a couple of slits for the seatbelts it should be straightforward, mmmmmmm he says

Just be sure to get a fair amount of tension on the cover so that it doesn't look cheap and nasty, it's what lets most fitted covers down.

Been doing some more work on the dash to make it wider but just adding more metal dose not look right. Did think about cutting the dash in front of the heater vents and adding a section there and stitching up together but then came up with a better idea. Now after another dash top so I can weld it to the extended part of the dash and then bridge to the part of the dash i have now. Reason for this is that it would look better and that i would have a way of connecting a heater up that cleared the screen. Hopes this make sence and if any one has a bay window dash top laying around please let me know

Why thankyou kind sir. Quick up date. Failed MOT, no side repeaters dispite passing last year like it at the same place, also failed on a steering gater, cv gater and a coupel minor things that needed adjustment, all done no retest Friday. Got stuck in to the dash again today, . Mate Doobie came over yesterday and suggested that I did a cut and shut job on the dash to widen it, exactly what my mate Nick said when he saw it except they both said cut it in different places. Well today was a rainy old day and after going out with Rox and buying some more fish for the tank i got itchy feet and the angle grinder came out. the band that I welded to the front of the dash was unstitched and reshaped, the dash was cut it two but not where Doobie or my nic suggested( thats me). Cut the dash along the vents as this would mean less welding but i would have to reshape them, that i knew but it has created a bit of a headache as all the welding was warped the dash and it now needs a lot of hammering back in to shape but hey it's only metal Here's a couple of pictures, vent not reshaper or any welding grinded down and it needs a lot of pulling in to shape

Looks like a really deep dash now, mind you, gives you plenty of space to put stuff or to even get some artwork sprayed on when you're finished tidying it up.
If a car comes without side repeaters from the factory, can it still be failed on that at test? I've never heard of a car failing an MoT on lack of side repeaters before, seems odd.

B3's had side repeaters when they left the factory, I deleted mine. Saying that the last year it past like it is but this year same garage different tested. Van has now past with some cheap stick on side repeaters fitted which were removed after the MOT. Not much happened on the dash front as I have been to busy welding up trim holes on the inside of the top half of the rear hatch ready for painting

Quick update Trim holes deleted in top half of the hatch Still having to have it so i can drive it but most of the interior is stripped including the dash leaving as much of the heater as I can to incorperate in the new dash When the new dash is fitted it will be a good time to tidy up the wiring
