A mate of mine offered me a Mk 3 Carlton a couple of weeks back. Up and running and ready to go with mint rear arches, a big plus with these cars. It's a 2.0 litre auto and is/was in the Bexley, Kent area. I say 'was' because I don't know if it's still available. I've had a couple of these in 2.0 litre form, and they go well enough. I'd have considered it myself, but up to my eyeballs at the moment. From memory, it's an L reg CDx and well within your budget. On the other hand, can you weld? If you can, get this bought before I do something really silly. If you're interested, let me know and I'll pm the bloke. This could be very cheap. forum.bmw5.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=29758

I always fancied having one of these so bought one about 8 months ago. It drove well and was FAST on the motorway. Kickdown at 90 & you're doing 120+ very shortly thereafter. Diamond blue with blue leather, 173K miles. It had been owned by the same family since 1992 & service by MB Southampton. HUGE history file full of letters, receipts etc. They attended to anything that needed doing as & when it arose, writing to the dealership before & after the service, hence the hefty service file. Very good spec with some rare & pricey options, in fact apart from the fridge in the boot & a tow bar I think it has everything available on the options list - automatic, driver's airbag, AC (works), CC, heated, electric, memory orthopaedic front seats, electric heated rear seats, electric rear window blind, acceleration skid control (ASR), town & country horns (a must have for any barge), alloys, hydropneumatic suspension with automatic level lowering device and controlled damping & many more goodies. Usual leccy windows, sunroof, central locking, vanity mirrors, leather wheel & gearknob, ABS, burr walnut wood etc. V. good matching Michelins on 15 hole alloys. The problems: Soon after I bought it the self leveling suspension pump started leaking & the car is sitting low at the front. I have a replacement pump but haven't fitted it. Access is easy. The car would need to be transported from RG10. MOT & tax expired a couple of months ago while I dithered about whether to fix it or break it. Rust in the front wings & on both bumpers. I have bought good, rust free second hand front wings (silver) & rust free bumpers but haven't fitted them. I also bought a diamond blue boot lid as the original one has bad lacquer peeling. Rust scabs above the rear bumper behind the rear wheel arches. It's just been sitting on my drive for weeks & I either need to sell it or break it. It starts immediately on the key. It's actually worth much more broken than whole but I think it would be a shame as someone who is a bit handy could fix it up cheaply & have a bit of a special car. Labour is the main thing needed as the parts are already found. It cost over £75,000 in 1989 & was the best saloon car in the world in it's day & is still better than many. A seriously engineered and quality built car. £650 Sitting low at the front?... This is a very rare car! ASR too - must be a late one - 90? 91? Quite a few have self levelling rear, but hydraulic suspension front and rear was a super rare and bloody expensive option. From the description, this is only a weekend's work to get back on the road. Hmm, bought two cars last week, don't think my good lady would appreciate a 5th Benz on the drive... I know of a couple of people in the MB throng who would be very interested in this car. Please get some more details up!
