Ah no!
That's a pretty bike though. Be nice if you can get a wheel that matches.
I picked up a nice racer on Freecycle, 531 frame, nice light stuff all over. The only problem is the back hub which is a bit worn and occasionally gives me problems. Obsolete now and you can only get them on eBay if one pops up.

They don't make 531 tubing anymore. Something about modern brazing techniques don't work well with it or something. I've had loads of 531 frames. Great stuff.

wheels are easy to build... theres loads of online guides to lacing tecniques and things.... not that it would work with that... your needing a new rim (lol defo not gonna true up ), might get away with the same spokes , hub should be fine....

The Norco is an MTB, probably mid 90's. When I learn how to rebuild bikes, I might grab it, tune it up, repack the bearings and flip it as it is a bit large for me. In the mean time.... Another bike! I actually went back to that place yesterday to check and see if he had anything else that would be cheap, and easy to put into service, or if he had anything that I could snatch the fork/wheel from. He seemed fresh outta 700c wheels, but there looked to be a candidate for fork swapping: A fully Lugged Apollo Mixte....or I could probably flip it, if I can learn to work on these things. I had to run though, so I went back to my parents for the night. Woke up, walked up to the place, and he had this Miyata sitting out front. $70. Seems to have next to no rust, and it fits me perfectly. Sold. The bike is all original from '85. I think the seat and tires are original! Don't like the pedals though, and something seems a bit off with the drive train, as it feels stiff to backpedal. Odd amount of resistance.

if it feels weird to backpedal its probably the cassete seized onto the hub , just strip it down, clean it all and repack with cycle grease and it should be good to go, but be prepared for all the lil bearings to drop out... you need to locate them by holding them still with a lump of grease lol that norco looks mid to late 80s to me ... with the rear brake and and the totall ridged frame .. looks like a very good candiadte for a build, possibly make a fixie and chuck some road tyres on it norco are a very good make... seen any of there current range? oh how they have changed

Heh, I have no tools for rebuilding bikes, not any knowledge on the topic. But I think I need to learn since it'll be much cheaper than having to keep buying then and paying someone else to fix them!
Now I need to find somewhere to get some cheap tools...

you could try squirting WD40 in the cassette. This is a quick fix. It will desolve the gummed up grease a bit. try turning the cassette teeth backwards with your fingers. so it works the pawls up and down. so the oil runs through it.
It is bad practise to oil it in this way. But if you cant get it to bits to clean it. It will do for a while

I made a chain whip. No point spending £30 on one when it gets used maybe once every couple of years. I just welded a bit of chain to an old cold chisel and it works well enough. There are 18 balls on those old cassettes. Just so you know how many to go looking for when they all come out and bounce across the floor

Just so you know how many to go looking for when they all come out and bounce across the floor try telling that to my old pug shopper (the one I'm electrolising) lol took the cassette of the hub and it had a good 30 odd per side (inner and outer) was some wierd obsolete simplex jobby..

theres ussualy about 9 bearings per side on the axle then it varies whats in the cogs by what brand and type it is.
if youve got a freewheel unit that screws onto the hub it will have hundreds and thousands of small bearings on either side of it.
If youve got a multi speed cassette hub where the sprockets are slide onto the grooved freehub body. Its got less bearings inside it. Also difficult to take to bits.
If youve got a Sturmey Archer 3 speed. Its got a few big bearings on the axle. Then a lot of smaller bearings under the cog.
Not had a Simplex hub. Have you got a picture of it?

Have you got a picture of it? havnt got a pic no, but its like a freewheel in the way it comes off , you knock round the lock ring and it slides off.. (all bearings go nuts ) and then theres a cassette body too which is like slide fit on the hub. no bearings in it it just free floats... blooming wierd lil thing but works well, doesnt tick when you back pedal tho lol

Like a surly, but without the brand "tax" You can also laugh that he prints all the angles incorrectly on the website, so he can laugh at the Chinese copy merchants wondering why their bikes ride funny. I've got this frame and the wife has this one That was Brant Richard's brand wasn't it?

To update, cause I can: Slapped a rack on the 310, and commuted it since I bought the thing: Then, in Febuary, I found this on the old Craigslist: Pretty mint '85 Miyata 912, Shimano 600 group, but with 105 levers. Rides beautifully. So I rode it, and took many pictures of it: So, I was happy for a bit. But as the weather started getting better, I started to miss the old LHT something fierce. Might have something to do with the fact that I never actually got the chance to take the poor thing on a tour! I knew this one shop had a naked alloy touring frame on their wall. They had it priced at $70. I was kind of waffling on it. It's 1 cm smaller than the LHT in the seat tube, but last month, I checked again, and they chopped the price to $50. I was in that afternoon, and they knocked a 10 off for me! So, I have this waiting for powder coating now: I'll be swapping over pretty much all of the parts from the LHT, though a 1" threaded headset is in order. I might get a quill adapter for it, or just use a straight up quill stem. Color wise...I think I might try to get it coated in a dark red-orange, like the colour of wet rust. Maybe.
