The hub bolt on my front offside wheel keeps coming undone, but slowly. I'll get it really very tight, but within about 2 weeks it'll have snapped the split pin and undone itself Is it supposed to have a reverse thread or something? I've tried lots of different things, but it always ends up coming loose again, which is quite dangerous! Anyone got any ideas? thanks in advance

Have you hammered the sides into the slots?
Cant remember the technical terms for them :-)

The sides of the split pin? If that then yes, but it didn't make a difference!

From memory the last time I changed a set of drive shafts I had to use a 6ft scaffold tube on the end of a breaker bar to get them undone. When I did the the hub nuts back up I used the same principle in reverse, and I had a washer that needed the tabs bent back up and hammered into the nut with a hole punch. I guess the mini just relies on a split pin though.

obvious question but is it always done up to the correct torque?
is this happening after doing a specific job, eg cv replacement?

It is to the correct torque, but i've also tried getting it tighter to see if that made any difference. Doesn't make any change on what I've worked on either!

Is the tapered washer there? Are the driveshaft splines worn, alowing movement? You shouldn't need a scaf pole to tighten the nut, there will be a torque setting.

wheels were balanced 2 weeks ago (and it happened before then and since) changed bearings 2 days ago, made no difference driveshaft not worn, and washer is fine. tried a few different hub bolts and washers to no avail. But I will try some loctite, and a stronger split pin. hopefully that'll sort it out! thanks for the help

Wierd. If ever there was a nut that wouldn't come loose I'd have said mini hub nut. Mini forums are full of youngsters asking, "why can't I undo my hub nuts with my 3/8 ratchet?".
If memory serves, the torque setting is 150ft/lb then around to the next split pin hole. A mechanic acquantance used to work on the basis of as tight as you can plus one full turn.
I read somewhere that, after major work you should torque up the hub nut with a big washer under the nut so that you apply the torque to the hub rather than just the various washers and spacers. I even bought one for that very purpose and used it on mine after frequent balljoint tomfoolery.
I think it went with all the rest of my mini stuff to Norfolk to Bstardchild's nephew but DSN classics sell them for not much money. It was just a washer approx 2" in diameter and 1/4" thick.
