Hate to be in your shoes now , trying to get insurance on a first car is horrendous , mine was a s2 daimler coupe but you could insure them back in the day , being a old parp has its advantages . Good luck with your first car mate .

Welcome to Retro-Rides! Mine was a '67 Triumph 2000 Mk1, which cost me £110 with a year's MOT and £40 a year to insure, and once I'd blown the stock 2-litre straight-six and plonked a 2500TC lump in it did 9mpg if I thrashed it (which I did, all the time). As you may have gathered, that was 25 years ago. If I were a yoof on a budget these days (rather than the fat old fool on a budget that I am now) I'd be going down the Renner 5/205/Mk2 Fiesta route as a cheap and easy way into Retro-dom. I like Polos, but you'll pay a premium (aka 'Scene tax', you'll se it mentioned a lot here) for stuff like wheels even if you manage to find a decent car at the right price. Anyway, as you've no doubt discovered already....if its inspiration you're after, you've come to the right place.

Yea the 2litre volve will probably be to steep to insure but the 1.4 and 1.7 are still mighty good fun.

My first car was a Herald 12/50. Rusty as FrJack it was.
A Polo breadvan is a good choice. cheap, easy to fix, fun to drive.

My first car was a Mk3 Cavalier 1.6 L Put a lowering kit on, and some decent tyres and it went round corners like nobodys business due the fact the engine is a small block and thus was very light. (it was however, diabolical before, with 165 section cheapies on it!) Also did 40mpg from mixed driving while full of camping stuff (only time I ever had the cash to keep filling it up and so work out MPG LOL) It was a hatch, and folding the back seats down presents a nice big comfy sleeping area for shows and house parties. I also managed to fit a massive 15" bass bin in there for said house party. It wasnt shockingly slow, had lovely throttle response as it was a carb model (the SPI aka Slow Pointless Injection that superceded it was dire) and parts were cheap as cheaps. I also think you can make them look pretty sweet these days, and they are still in the 'unloved' section of their life so are dirt cheap. Downside is Ive seen many many many many many many many abused ones that just arent even worth the time of day. Owned the old girl for 5 years. Only parted ways when I crashed her and I couldnt justify the cash to jig an old Cav L

My first car was technically a Rover P5b, (still got it 15 years later)
My first proper road car was a Renault 25,closely followed by a Saab 900 then a Sierra hatch...

After a bit of memory jogging, my brother finally reminded me that my first car was his old 1966 Super Anglia 123E. That's worrying as I could have sworn that my first car was a Mini! Gotta love the onset of old age.

I definitely think that the Polo is the way forward.
My little loon was great as a first car. Slow, but not dangerously so, bullet proof engine, not rusty, started on the key etc.
205s suffer from electrical gremlins and are probably more tempremental, however it is pretty much unknown for an unpranged one to rust!

I bought my first car for about £200 when I was sixteen. Behold the majesty of the 1.0 Nova... Very cheap to insure and maintain! Lesson learned - a 1.0 Nova will do 100mph with four people in it - but it'll only do it once. And then there'll be bits everywhere.

My 1st car was a 1970 MG Midget which I bought when I was 17 in 1996. Insurance was £630. Two-seaters make great 1st cars as it means your friends can't sponge lifts off you all the time!

My first car was a breadvan, cost me just under a grand in '99 and the insurance was about £400! Drove it for about 2 years & then kept it as a reliable spare for when whatever mini/golf/capri I had at at the time was crashed/broken down. Sadly ended up like this: Still drove fine though despite the crease in the roof & A pillar ;D Awesome little cars!

My first car was a gold Austin Metro City, which I didn't have for long but my first proper car was a Skoda Favorit LS estate. Awesome car, especially when going away with mates etc.
The Volvo 300 series is great for insurance, but I can't say I'd recommend them as a first car - you have to be really keen on them in my opinion to put up with the hard to source parts, rust, economy etc
