I had a Polo as a first car, really simple mechanically so a good car to start learning on. Just don't get one that's rusted to bits like mine was.

I had a Renault 5 1.4 for my first car, wasn't too bad, cheap but a bit rough. I'd have another one though. oh, and they can look like this... Welcome to the forum by the way!

I'd say go for something older but that's 'cos that's what I'm into. No reason you should discount 40+ year old cars as first cars as long as you can get insurance.

My first car was a x-reg Mk1 Polo LX in 1990. I still have a '93 Polo now as a bakup/daily driver for when my retro or kit car goes wrong. ;D
A 205 could be another option.

If you are wanting something with cheap insurance, think about the Fiat Panda. These are cheap to run (54mpg from mine), cheap insurance (group 1), the engines are non interference (timing belt snaps, and it wont ruin the engine), plus you can modify them quite a bit (a few are running 1242cc punto engines). Also you can pick up a very good one for £300-£400

Welcome to Retro Rides. My first car (proper one) was a Silver Nova SR - done right they look sweet - easy to work on and upgrade as your insurance goes down. or this.................. look around and a few have been done real well I like the two door stretch tyre black bonnet and pokey 1.0 litre engine.

Back when I got a first car, i was rolling a volvo 340 five door,,,engine at the front,,gearbox at the rear gave it 50/50 weight distribution and rwd drift handling and its 1.4 and subsequent renault 5 ,,,1.1 and 1.4 and 1.7 engines seemed to thrive on revs
(ins group 7 for the 340 and group 8 for the 118 bhp 2.0 ,,,,i got away with 500 quid for mine as a named driver at 18)

Volvo 340/360 is a good shout cheap to insure and buy and are rear wheel drive, so great in the wet, plus its a volvo so safe. Only downside is there's not a lot of aftermarket parts for em, but then thats part of the fun.

First car was a 998 Mini Mayfair. Rather than be biast and say a mini ( ) I'd suggest either the breadvan or the coupe, Mk1/2 Fiesta or a low engined R5. Will probably add more in a minute though

Wow, thought the volvo would be a higher insurance group for the 2.0, like you say, seriously fun in the wet and a great sleeper!, You guys had such great first cars

First car was a 205 Roland Garros (and my name's Adam too, spooky!).
So, as it gave me a load of fun for the best part of a year I'll suggest one of them.
But, as a VW nut, I'll 5th or 6th, or whatever it is, the Polo suggestion. Drop it on 13" ATS Classics (predictable I know, but effective) and Bob's your Auntie's husband.
