I'm from devon and have found the mini scene to be pretty good down here. don't think ive noticed any cooper replicas around. most of the mini owners I have met are from my generation (around 21) and tend to go for a street race look with their cars. where as my mini is heavily influenced by the dub scene and articles found on this website such as ridiculously negative camber, banded steels and rat look bonnets.
I have yet to take my mini to a show, I would like to get it almost finished before I show it. I just know the purists will hate it. I promised the previous owner I would not modify the car. I hope I don't drive past her house. i have heard lots of comments from people who like my car as they say it is a nice break from the drab you see at shows. trying to set up a club at the moment, shouldnt be too difficult, 3 of my mates now drive minis and I am friends with the guys at both my local mini specialists. when the club is running id rather turn away any bini owners. I do not have anything against the car or their - estate agent - owners but its just not a mini if it aint got rust, is it? those cars belong in a completely different scene where they can talk about 17" alloys, warranties and airbags.
and yes parts for minis are stupidly expensive but there arnt many cars which offer such a wide range of custom parts and spares. let alone sites like minispares who offer everything right down to nuts and bolts for them.

ive been into minis for about 10 years, up to 2 years ago it was brilliant then i found other cars, scenes, mags etc and mini just seemed awfully dull in comparrision, there doesnt seem to be trend in the mini scene that come and go
cooper reps are always popluar
sportspack reps are always popular
what i really want to do is, build a mini in the vw style, smooth bay, hidden wiring, air ride, some "out side the box" wheels. smoothed bodywork etc
i think it would look amazing if done well.

I've had a few minis in my time, and I've got to admit that I never realy got into the whole thing of shows, just not my scene realy. I did go to a few, but mainly to pick up spares, and I can't see the fun in a Shine&show day. As for clubs, I suppose they are all different, usually depending on peoples personalities., you either get on with the members or you don't. And not wanting to start an argument I won't even mention the Bini Clubman, except that they have re-introduced a proper colour back onto the car market

Reason why I don't 'do' clubs? See above. New Mini owners= Estate Agents? My sister's on her 3rd Cooper S. Youth Outreach Worker. SWMBO's sister is on her first Cooper. NHS Intensive Therapy Unit Ward Sister. At Retro-Rides stereotyping gets as short a shrift from me as negativity.

No they don't and this is the problem with the mini scene. The VW scene gets some stick but at least you don't see Split owners jeering and taunting MKV Golf GTI owners. Sure the new beetle didn't go down to well to begin with but it's now excepted for what it is, a different shaped Golf and you see some cool ones knocking about the shows that happily rub shoulders with their aircooled ancestors. Mini owners need to wake the f up. The Binis are the future of the scene and unless the younger classic owners grasp this fact soon the flat cap and tweed brigade will absorb the mini scene into the rest of the classic british car scene and it will lose what individuality it once had. The mini scene has stagnated and it needs the injection of Bini owners and their cash to bring it round before it's put down. I think you'll find that most Bini owners who want to take their car's to shows also won't be the estate agent liveried cars. I think you'll find it's mostly the petrolhead, party animals that will go. Have a look on youtube and the rest of the net and you'll find there are some awesome Binis out there that have some clever mosdifications and some that are running very very respectable 1/4 mile times. I won't pos them on here though as they ain't retro. nick

And another thing.
How do you expect the scene to continue to grow? I get the feeling a lot of classic mini owners are in denial about the fact they are no longer being built so the numbers on the road (and hence numbers at shows) can only go one way. down. What you need is someone building new cars for new owners so more people will get into them and come to the shows and spend money. There's a company in Oxford doing just that.
Lets fast forward to 2018. Assuming we've not been sent back to the dark ages by financial turmoil your average 17 year old will be looking for a cheap first car that's small, fun, easily customisable and plentiful. Hello Bini! They'll be heaps of 10 year old ones floating about on eBay and used car lots for much cheapness. Parts will be easy to get and you can stick stuff on them till your hearts content to make it individual. Win. Now how much different is this to classic mini owners of the last 10 years? Is this not why most young people bought a classic mini?
The VW, ford, vauxhall scenes thrive because there is a constant influx of new models which then age and become part of the old skol scene. The circle of retro life as it where. The mini scene can't as it's stuck itself in a corner being dedicated to one model of car that ceased production. 2CV owners have the same problem but they don't have the luxury of someone building and selling a modern version with the same name to keep their heritage alive.
Blimey, I went off on one a bit but I think I've said all I can say on this matter.
Nick

What Horney Said. ;D The same principles apply to any club 'scene', from *** with their refusal to accept that anything FWD is worth their time despite the first Mk1 Fiestas being over 30 years old to the **** where if it's not a '32 Ford, it's not a proper Hot Rod. Eventually attitudes have to change, or you end up with a load of old blokes at shows muttering into their beer about The Good Old Days while everyone else just gets on with 'Having Fun With Cars'. *- Forum names blanked to combat any accusations of 'Forum-Bashing'

Totally agree with what has been said - seems that alienation is not a good thing!
Any group of people unwilling to accept and embrace fresh, new ideas worries me greatly.
Someone needs to tell them that change CAN be a good thing.

BD - bit random this but, as you're not far from me, were you involved with the show that used to be by Redditch Football club/Bridley Moor's old playing field?
Only remember it from once a few years ago but, from what I could see, it looked like a good little gathering. Best bit was that I was able to go in and have a nose on the guise of walking the in-law's dog as they've got a gate onto that field. Result!

OMG, reading this seem to say to me that what's happening with the mini scene is what's happened to vanning. I can't be doing with the cliquey thing any more, and prefer to hang around with cortina owners now!

i was brought up on minis and i've owned three, me and my dad went from county durham to sliverstone for the 40th mini b day party in a 1961 mini 850 and when we got there we found it very clicky and as we wernt in a club no seemed to speak to us, the nicest person we spoke to was bill sollis when i bought his book and he kindly signed it. i find alot of rivialry in the scene, which i don't find in the retro scene where people give each other help/encouragment/praise no matter what they are driving/building, well thats my opinion. oh and that kit car in black is a magenta, my next door neighbours son is the prseident of the club for them and my dad had a black one 2 years ago.

I found the mini scene far more clicky and closed than any other by far. On the L2B run in 2003 we stopped at a set of lights and on the opposite side coming the other way were a group of maybe 10 fiat 500's out on a run. They all tooted and waved and I was the only one to wave back, at least 6 cars in front of me ignored them . Even dubbers are more tolerant.

We seen them and they all tooted, me and SWMBO and another mini waved and tooted back and was given really discusted looks by the other minis in the convoy. We parked up and stayed for about 30mins then left. No one wanted to speak to us. Even people in the same club as us just wouldn't talk as they were too busy cleaning there minis.

This thread is starting to look like a mini owners splinter group/club is about to start. That's what the world needs; another Mini club. We could call it the British Mini Club For Mini Enthusiasts Who Don't Like Dressing Up Like curse word And Who Don't Like Minilights But Do Like Veedub Type Shows or BMCFMEWDLDULTAWDLMBDLVTS For short.
