I'm looking at replacing the passat with a lowered mk2 16v golf gti as i feel a 'need for speed' at the moment.
is there anything else i should be considering instead of a golf for a good high speed cheap thrash....that i can sit at high speed on the motorway and throw around quiet a-roads with ease? the passat is good at motorways but not really a-road twists and turns......
I'm looking at the most £600 i think.

Pug 309 GTi.
All the good bits of the 205, plus more space / better cruising / feel slightly less like your surrounded by cardboard rather than metal / cheap as chips.

I've always had a soft spot for either an Alfa 75 V6, or a Daihatsu Charade Gtti... You must be able to get one of either for that wedge...

A BMW E30 320i is surprisingly nimble and has RWD.

My mate had one when he was a student, he was 24 at the time, they're not as hurrendous as people think. Worth a look

By a stange turn of fate my milometer never worked.....

BB The Charade is a bonkers car - sounds like a 911 (due to having an inline 3 engine) And will lift-off oversteer for Japan! Great fun, but try getting spares for them You can't go wrong with a nice 8v Golf GTi, though I like the sound of an Alfa, as its something abit different

Predictably a vote for a Mk2 Golf GTI or 16v from me ;D You can't get much better for reliability, rust resistance and generally being bombproof for that budget. Sometimes think of replacing mine but there's nothing else that'd do the job for twice the money in my opinion.

if you fancy an alfa 33 or 75, let me know I can always get my hands on them (though a good 3.0 75 might be a struggle for £600)
