I bought a complete allegro just for its new front wings. The guy knew the value of scrap so charged me £120. Fair enough I guess!
When I weighed it the price had dropped so I only got £80 odd for it. Id loaded it up with all the scrap metal id collected over the year too so it was actually heavier than when I bought it. Jolly pain in the backside!

I bought a k reg granada scorpio, running and had t+t till the end of the month i bought it. Payed 160 notes for it cus thats what the scrap man would give him.
I took the engine out, leather interior out, front brakes, back box then filled it with rubbish and weighed it in for 100 notes. Bargain. However scrap now so low I wouldnt bother doing it to make money.

£80 a ton last week in N London, still better than 5 or 6 years ago when it was £1 a ton A lot of places round here won't take cats any more, you have to go to Churches in dagenham and open an account and have a waist carryers liecence as well .

That's where we send all our stuff at work, 26 tonnes every 10 days or so.. And seeing as threads need pics around here,my favourite tool at work: Not found anything yet that it won't either bale or crush

Dropped a fair bit oop north too. Got a nice whack for a big old Citroen a few weeks back (still polluted too) then got offered £60 for a complete running Rover 416i with cat and everything three weeks later! There's a lot of 'reasons' being banded about as to why scrap money is low, some say yards got greedy and stockpiled it so the docks were rammed full, others say since the olympics have finished they're waiting for China to get going again and it will rise again. Locally prices drop off just before Christmas anyhow so I'm not expecting a major rise in price until the new year now personally. It should be remembered that if weighing in then don't go at the start of the month as that's when they get more cars in due to expired tax discs so the crafty blighters drop their prices slightly. Oh, another mad sounding theory locally is that the closer you live to Liverpool the better price of scrap (which actually does seem to be true) because that's where it gets shipped out from and I'm told the same is true in Manchester due to the ship canal.

all4show, didn't know Norton's had a Manchester one too. They have had obscene amounts of scrap out of where I work I believe (all legit I hasten to add), quite probably thousands of tonnes. I know what you mean about the middleman, there's only really one actual metal yard round here and they de-pollute and crush before going elsewhere. Trouble is with the exception of maybe one or two other yards it wouldn't pay me to go further out after fuel costs and time factored in. I believe there's two yards in Widnes who pay very good money but not tried them yet.

That's perfectly correct, in Wales near Swansea and Newport they get more per ton than in London, cos the company don't have to haul it 200 miles there to get it fragged and on the boat.

Funnily enough, I was going to start a topic on this very same subject. I hope it has dropped - right through the floor. How many half decent motors were put to the sword out of pure greed. Much more of that and we'd all be driving round in mundane euro boxes. That Carlton CDi was a good case in point. Too right! I would gladly see it go back to being a £1 a ton, then there would be plenty of parts for us, and cars won't go missing.

or they will just have to weigh more cars in to get the wage they were geting when the price was high.

i started a thread like this on another forum after watching 30-40 cars get wieghed in while i was waiting in another part of the yard & my brothers mate did a 150 mile round trip to get some xr3i bits off me for a track car he was building as no scrap yards near him had anything in dizzy : yeah nortons have a MASSIVE yard here in trafford park just off the M60 but you wouldnt know it was there till you where shown the best bit is you only need to take the wheels off & they do the rest
