So, if money and time was no object what engines would you grab from a modern and stick into a retro? Heres some to get the ball rolling. Take one csl: And add the 507bhp V10 engine from the M5. These sound like an F1 car, incredible: Or to keep it straight six, the 3.0 twin turbo unit found in the 135i: Take the loveable 2cv: And add a ripsnorting flat 4 boxer engine from the STI: Take a Camaro: And add the (600! ) horspower engine from the incredible ZR1: One of these: Added to the amazing rotary engine from the utterly bonkers (but hot) Furai: Finally, this: with one of the twin turbo R34 Skyline motors: All a bit obvious? Show me what you'd do, the crazier the better!

Those V12 Merlins are amazing. Weren't they making around 1500 bhp in the final incarnations?
Seems like a huge amount of power even now but back in the forties it must have been jaw dropping!

This in 1.6 variety, slightly breathed upon and this. In homage to the Alfa Arna ;D or a mid mounted Alfa V6 but that would be just plain stupid.

Mmmm - wouldn't mind an Amazon with a modern turbot diseasel donk of about 2.5 litres. Not sure which one - whatever will fit in the engine bay, perferably with a matching rwd gearbox. Also 550 squids worth of Quaife LSD to help put the power down. ;D

Then we can go to santapod and race...

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I'd be quite happy with a new V6, maybe the latest oen in the SAABs for my 'zon, just big enough to be fun. WRX powered bambino could be fun actually, a 2.4 Subi boxer supercharged in teh morrie sounds good too!

I'd have one of these General Electric GE90-115B gas turbine engines which are rated at 123,000 pounds of thrust (which is aprox 150,000bhp depending on how you measure these things) mounted in one of these. but you can have first go.

mk2 cortina estate + either a Nissan sr20 DET or a Nissan l28et and appropriate gearboxes. Failing that a Mazda 13b REW twin turbo would do nicely

one of the great things about old cars is that they have old engines in them. If I wanted all that complicated electromatronicary I'd just use my euromillions win or whatever to buy a modern performance car (I kinda fancy a Cadillac CTS-V an Escalade a Mustang KR500 a 300C SRT8 and a Corvette ZR-1 for starters) and I'd just pay the local main dealer / specialist to service and maintain them while I wasted my life away wrenching on my 40 year old stuff for fun.

i like all the electronicy stuff on engines, it makes em go faster while using less juice, and with the much better manufacturing they use building them these days they last oodles longer on average, trouble is all the luxuries in new cars make em heavy and most of em look rubbish, so on balance i like modern engines in old cars. (don't think i'll be able to bring myself to bin the twin cam 6 from the merc though, its lovely.)
