After reading the Winky the safety cat thread, I thought I'd have a look in the shed to see what bizarre pieces of motoring related tat I could find, here are three unused examples of the sort of thing the original owners of our cars might have bought in halfords. Firstly, an important breakthrough in road safety, the directional signal light belt. Ideal for (according to the box) Cycling, Snowmobiling, Camping and Hiking, although the first two would have to let go of one side handlebar to fumble with the little switch, and IMO if you need illuminated indicators while hiking or camping you may be doing it wrong/ Here it is out of the box in its full WWF meets flash gordon glory. Next, fancy doing some car spraying, but don't want to buy expensive compressor? don't worry, your car has a compressor! thats right, spray paint with engine power using the Autosprayt! ONLY thirty nine shillings and sixpence! How can you go wrong? The sides of the box certainly promise great results, everything from inflating tyres to a professional finish on the whole car, and for afters you can use it to spray the tomatoes too. Then, you get home and open the box.... Hmm, looks like a piece of hose, and a small tin can with "spray gun written on it Where's the instructions? Ahhhh. Back in the shed without trying it then. Now, In car entertainment. (solid) state of the art AM radio offering switchable long and medium wave, and a choice of positive or negative earth installation. comes with mounts, ariel lead (ariel sold seperatly), baffle board and speaker. One whole watt of output power should be plenty, yes? and a random advert, in case you need a drink after that lot.

Somewhere in the darkest recesses of my garage I have a genuine Lucas immobiliser for a Mini. I bought it from ebay about 4 years ago when my insurance decreed that an immboliser as needed on a 1986 Mini. I paid about £12 for it and, to be honest I was robbed.
It came in an OE Lucas box and consisted of 1 99p plastic rocker switch, about 3 feet of heavy duty cable and 4 male and 3 female spade connectors. There was also a little pamphlet explaining where to hack into the low tension circuit. It also advised "hiding" the switch inside the car.
If I can find it, I'll take a pic.

Clearing out my grandmother's garage last weekend I came across a boxed attachment to convert your Goblin vaccum cleaner into a paint sprayer, must remember to get a photo next time I am over there.

Cool,
Wouldn't that compressor thing be a bit dangerous though, what with petrol fumes spraying out the end, lol.
Nice finds.

Those are excellent! I scanned this page from an old car magazine I have, advertising a couple of 'old-school' safety innovations. (My first post here, too.)

SOC, the spray gun thingie is way cool! My father in law toured round Europe in a Mini in 1960 and used a similar Schrader Pump for inflating the tent. Each time he and his brother stopped out came a spark plug to make their home for the night! We bought one (NOS) off ebay a little while ago but I haven't tried using it yet. Suterman, there's a little pump/valve in the line so the engine vapour gets vented and the ouput is just normal air. Here's a fire extinguisher that I think came with my Rapier. I know I didn't buy it as such. I've tweaked the knob and there's still some rather dodgy, carcienogenic compressed substance inside!

Love the cycle safety belt! That almost certainly comes from the period between 1968 and 1971 when the UK stayed on British Summer Time all year as an experiment. I started school in January 1970 and can still remember walking to school in the dark wearing the Government-issue reflective armband that all schoolchildren were issued with. Top stuff.

It has a power lead, an ariel in and an ariel out, a power on button and lots of mysterious buttons.

And there is more. The "Norton" high frequency converter... Saves fuel, increases performance, improves starting etc... Ah, the instructions in the box say I also need another 4 black convertors for the thing to do its biz properly. Didn't mention that on the OUTSIDE of the box, did it? So, in the days before eBay, where exactly did people byu total rubbish quality products like this? Easy, out of the back of car magazines, and I found a 1963 copy of Practical Motorist to cull some examples from doesn't say how it works.... says its great though. Ford can afford a whole page... aftermarket spares with as-new quality and durability standards. Bet that was really comforting to owners of elderly sidevalve pops then but its the back pages where you find the true bargain miracles..Send SAE to box no for FULL DETAILS. Money back guarentee. Literally some satisfied customers! Not bankrupted since 1962.... etc.
