It's fairground time here in Oxford! Once a year the main road into the north side of town, St. Giles, is closed for 3 days for St. Giles Fair, IMHO one of the better funfairs I have attended. This year I made a detour on my walk into work to look out for any interesting trucks used as showmans wagons or generator sets. Fodens, Atkinsons, Scammels, you know the ones. Imagine my disappointment when all I could find were modern trucks, and grey ones at that. I know the older ones are still out there, maybe they're on the small fair circuit these days. Anyway, to make up for it here's the kind of stuff I was looking for.

I love some of the mad stuff they tow around the country for fairs, eg a full length lorry towing a full length trailer with wheels at each corner and steering front wheels, which in turn is towing a fook-off caravan... almost 100' of road space sometimes ;D

Out of interest how were these things built. They seem almost too well put together to be one man efforts, where there companies specializing in coach building them?

Love that last shot. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who loved the noise of the generators as much as some of the amusements!

Went to Haddenham Steam Fair (Cambs) at the wkend, where this was headed. Brilliant stuff - steam lorries, traction engines, old tractors, various classics, old bikes, etc etc, and the Wall of Death. Failed dismally to take the digi camera though. A great day out for looking at old and varied engineering...

Am I making this up in my puddled head or are you limited to 25mph by law if you've got a trailer hitched to a trailer... I.e pulling any more than one trailer with your driven vehicle

Showman's wagons are also exempt from MoT regs as far as I know.

I thought all travellers were automatically exempt from MOT, as well as road tax, insurance, registration, driving licence and paying tax...

The Anderton & Rowland Waltzer lorry has been laid up for a couple of years. The Devey family (A&Rs proprioters) still own the 2 Scammell Showtracs Dragon & Gladiator (Middle & Right) & can be seen at Dingles steam village museum, the 3rd in the picture, Scammell Highwayman Demetrius is now in preservation Gladiator

I am loving these old lorries! Have also noticed the fairground trucks are getting younger, which is worrying. I do wonder if the LEZ has anything to do with it, I know the showman's wagons are exempt, but wonder how easy it is to get them registered as such.

Brixham Steam Fair a couple of years ago. Thanks for the insight, always interesting to know a bit of background on these things.

[sweeping generalisation] Seeing as most fun fairs are run by travellers, I'm assuming they just weigh the older trucks in when they get too much hassle to run, and buy shiny nice new trucks, which are exempt from er.....everything apparently![/sweeping generalisation]
