Small turbo I’m looking for a bit of help or even just some idea’s, I fancy fitting a small turbo to a 170cc 4 stroke scooter engine. So far I’ve found this one on ebay………… cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=170257086439&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=007I though this would do at first but after a bit more research found that this particular one is cooled by both oil and water, seeing as the 170cc engine is air cooled I really need a turbo that’s oil cooled only. I’ve investigated some small car turbos such as a smart car turbo but its part of the manifold so is no good to me. Anyone got any good suggestions?

You don't need to use the water side of the turbo mate... just leave the ports open, it'll work fine. ;D

Could you not cut the manifold off the smart's turbo?

I don't know how youre going to do this.... The Smart turbo is a garrett GT12 , the Smart engine is about the smallest its used on (normally you find these on oldish 1.0-1.6 litre non-VNT diesel engines). Your 170cc engine is about a tenth the size of the engines normally used, what engine speed does it run at? even if its twice normal 'car engine speed' this turbo is going to be hugely oversized, the mass flow through your engine at full chat will be barely enough to wake it up.

what engine is the 170? gilera? does a high VE have anything to do with turbo sizeing?

t does, but only because it affects the mass flow which along with the boost pressure required, are the two key factors in choosing your turbo (compressor side). VE is variable from one engine to another, but the effect of VE on the mass flow is negligible compared to the effect of going from a 1700cc engine to a 170cc engine.

That's the one I was thinking of.
I wonder if you PM Norm "BlitzRacing" to see if he can point you in the right direction.
He knows a lot, and works in racing circles, so my know a tuner just by chance.
Good luck anyway. Looks interesting , if not challenging.
