Pick one of these up on Saturday, my god it's hard to find a decent road bike on a budget even some old 80's Racers are fetching silly money. just bought to go for the odd ride with my brother and save petrol/wear and tear on those journeys that are just too far to walk and not really far enough to justify driving, until he realises how unfit I am and no longer lets me go. at which point, maybe a fixed gear conversion will be needed. It's not strictly retro, but it has got downtube shifters! , and I'm sure I can spruce it up with some retro touches. anyone know much about Viking bikes, all I know is I think they used to be bult up north somewhere , and were back in the day fairly decent bikes

I had a Viking racer years ago My brother used it when he was young. sister used it a bit.
It was orange/ black. Had steel Rigida 27" rims on Maillard hubs. With an atom 5 speed block with a Continental 48/52 steel chainset. A Huret rear mech. He built it up with only 5 speed. No front mech. I fitted a front mech to it. I used it for club runs. It had a sticker on the seat tube that said Tour de France winner, then some years. I got it sprayed dark blue metalic. Fitted 700c alloys with a Dyno front hub. The 6 speed block was worn on the top cog. So couldnt use top much. I fitted Solida alloy cranks 42/52 rings. With nearly matching blue mudguards it was a good looking bike. I fitted a switch in the front light bracket. But it didnt work very well, so I just left the lights on. Club mates called it a Volvo as it had daytime lights. I was out on it one night. The rear wheel was buckled. Bugged me. So I got off and abandoned it. I walked 2 miles. Then got a lift for 5 miles home. But was biking back from the pub, so was tired and emotional.

you'll struggle with a useable fixed gear conversion on that i'm afraid, not for cheap anyway
magic gear is possible, but there is no way i'd risk that on a fixie as the chainline and tension needs to be spot on

in a strange twist the bike shop called me to say your bike is in, and we've checked it over........errrrrrrmmmm it is definately the right bike but it has muddy fox decals........... they came from the same factory you see, do you mind?
so it seems I will now be picking up that bike, but it will be a muddy fox ? odd x 10

What's the frame made of? Racers pwn other bikes on the road, so effortless to ride.

Lightweight aluminium according to the blurb . Won't be as light as my brothers specialized (carbon forks etc), but it'll do for me
