No reason why it should leak, never have problems with mine when I service it. I'd look very carefully at the pan face mating flange, dress down any 'swellings' by bolt holes etc, then try it on the trans without a gasket to see if it lies flat to the trans. There should not really be any gaps between the two, if there is keep dressing the pan till its flat, this ought to cure it. Most people waaay overtighten pans, just do bolts up hand tight (just 'nip' them up) with a socket extension (no ratchet on the end!) and go around several times as they will go looser as you tighten the adjacent ones. Think the torque settings are only about 10 lbs/ft max.

Silly question but did you check the pan with a straight edge? They do warp easily...

Yup don't overtighten them. A bloke I know always complains about having loads of leaks on his 40 ford and its because he tightens everything up too much. As mark said just hand tighten and it'll be fine.

hi allistair, might also be worth checking the pan hasnt been overtightened and pulled by the bolt holes? when you have it off lay it ona flat surface see if the bolt holes are pulled up and then dress them flat again if they are, have had unsealable sumps due to this where people just keep widing the bolts up to stop it leaking and effectively stretch the steel through the gaskets

OK, thanks for all the suggestions guys. Today I had a bash at it again, popped the car BACK up on the stands, dropped the pan, still plenty of frikin ATF in it and of course I'm sliding around in the stuff under the car like a mud wrestler at Chubby's - but with smaller breasts. Funky early type strainer canister Anyway, mopped up the mess as best I could. ATF is the slippiest stuff known to man, turns your garage floor into a scating rink like nothing else. Anyway, I got a tap I carefully selected to be the exact pitch and diameter of the pan bolts, although it doesn't look it in this photo, and recut the treads on a couple of the tricky bolt holes in the trans. cleaned up all the threads on the pan bolts and the pan as well. So I also cleaned the cork gasket really carefully (Kev, not sure if they do a neoprene seal for these early versions, the pan is different on the pre-1968 models.) Dosed it with plenty of "semi permenant" gasket sealer, pan to seal and seal to trans. Let it "set up" for a couple of minutes and then fit it back on the car, gave it half an hour to set and then back in with 5 litres of fresh ATF and watched as it all pished out all over the floor again like a curse word. Nuts. thats 10 litres of Dextron II wasted so far on this. There is anothe rbolt which doesn;t nip right up, but its nowhere near the leak. I can retap that one as well I guess and but I'm thinking all you chaps saying "check the pan isn't warped" are right and if I'd read this before rather than after I reckon I could have saved me 5 litres of ATF and half a tube of sealer and a wasted afternoon. Hopefully its just that.

And I am having a "WTF" day with the PC to. My "Akku!" has changed to "Sample" on the pics and I am having a mare navigating this site as I click on the "page 2" bit and it starts to load page two then rediverts to page 1. happens on all threads I try but only on R-R. Most odd.

ahh... I know the feeling of spending a fortune on fluids cos you just can't get something just right... in my case it was brake fluid, took me 4 attempts at bleeding the brakes and all that wasted fluid before I got it right... never mind fella, just persevere with it, it'll all come good...

guess who wishes he'd fitted a sump drain plug to the box now? Paul was going to for me when he had it, but they were out of stock with the bits at Real Steel and so I thought I'd cut one in before refitting it, and then didn't and then...
meh.
Messy and expensive business wasting all that fluid LOL

Is it definitely coming out of the sump joint? Is there anywhere else that could cause a leak? An oilway plug or something?
I have no knowledge of auto boxes...

Those sumps warp very easily, they're nothing more than stamped steel. Check it with a straight edge, even a slight warp will cause it to leak live a seive.

I am assuming it is warped, not had time to check it unfortunately. I'm in Birmingham again this week so minimal time available in the evenings when I'm home.

And on a related matter... ...I am reminded that when I acquired the car the pan was attached with plenty of silicon sealer....

Considering who it came from you're lucky it wasn't held on with tarmac.
Corsair's in the same state it's been in for the last three years only a bit rustier since it's spent a few weeks outside under a tarp while I got the Mustang done, which I did (almost). Just a handbrake cable and a pair of front tyres away from an MOT now. I'm planning to consider thinking about getting on with the Corsair soon. Hopefully the Hot Rod Drags will give me some enthusiasm.
Is the Caddy running yet?

cheers Bill. I'm back in the UK again now and will be back onto the car again this week some time. If I need the pan I'll let you know but I could do with it back on the road ASAP, like this week really. I'm using (shudders) public transport at the moment, and that just ain't right.
Lee, LOL @ Tarmac. He still got that Chevy?
