After a bit of fine tuning and a few weeks on the road i have done a few sums and came up with a figure of 40mpg for my old chevette 1256, i use it to go to work which consists of a 3 miles through town then 10 miles on the open road, i found this quite suprising for a 30 year old car, my other daily hack is a vw sharan 1900 tdi the 90hp version and on the same run only manages about 36mpg. so with petrol cheaper than diesel the retro ride wins all the way. Interested to hear how many your retro ride can manage to the gallon..

Depending on how i drive it, my old Monza GSE auto used to get as low as 17mpg going to and from work, up to about 30mpg on a longer run (except when i was towing a loaded car trailer back from Southampton, 17mpg all the way then!)
My old manual Senator 24v did 37.2mpg once, i was using it to visit my then girlfrien who lived 100 miles away & i didn't have a lot of cash for fuel so it got driven very carefully! That car holds a few personal records, got an average speed of 104mph on a journey up the M5 between Bristol and junction 4 of the M5 near Birmingham! Also got an indicated 159mph on the speedo once (police calibrated clocks), not telling where!
Out of my current cars, my manual Monza 3.0E will do about 28mpg on a run if i'm extremely careful (which isn't often). My Carlton track car rarely does above 20mpg because i thrash it all of the time!!! I would imagine that it would do above 30mpg, it's a lot lighter than standard, but economical driving just doesn't suit me!!!

I'm with you on the economical driving thing, i cant help thrashing the little 1256 engine it just sounds so sweet at high revs, and still 40mpg. lovin it.

My first car was a HA Viva with the 1057cc version of the 1256 engine, it was the deluxe version on a Stromberg CD carb so a little more power too. Then i had an early Viva HC which should have had the 1159cc engine carried over from the HB, but had a 1256 Chevette engine instead! I seem to remember adjusting the points every other week, & don't get me started on the drum brakes all round!! Learnt how to adjust valve clearences on those engines, don't leave them too long like i did though, i ended up with a pushrod going straight through the rocker!!

Between 8 and 12 Between 14 and 23 (on gas) Around 40ish as it's running ridiculously lean, but I've not had time to sort the jetting... Currently running on less than half'ish' throttle!

I've not clocked it lately, but I reckon the Kadett does low 30's on a combined cycle of pootling in traffic and caning the nads off it. Mundano 2.5 does 30 on the same with both doing markedly better given a chance to stretch thier legs. Worst recently was the Mini. This sank £20 of Esso's finest just sitting there, ticking over in the workshop while I tried to figure out why the hell it wouldn't go properly!

Approx 20mpg Approx 30mpg (Although got it at 40 while towing a trailer) Dread to think! More GPM than MPG. Approx 30mpg when its on the road Should be around the 100mpg mark, but I doubt it. Just finished using the petrol it came with, going to brim it tomorrow and find out. Been off the road so long I don't know.

MG Turbo does about 35mpg if you drive it sensibly and about 35gpm if you drive it like you stole it. EFi does 40 on a run, 25 around town. 1.3HLE does about the same, bizarrely.

The Pop does about 35mpg. Not bad for a 50 year old motor that gets ragged.

From this on the way home from RRG08 49mpg, on the way there 52mpg. Usually round the 40 to 45 mile range but mostly round town. Worst I ever got was 12mpg out of my old Alfa, but did manage to hit the rev limiter in fifth showing 137mph on that run through Germany.

in the Amazon I get about 23mpg during semester (only maybe 10km round trips, very hilly) but i get better then 30mpg in more normal and extended driving. should get alot better when i get the carbs rebuilt, as they are still running far too rich.

the van on a run will give around 30-35mpg as long as you keep it below 3k in 5th but then 2k is 75mph so thats not really a problem : the estate with the blower on is around 25-30 not sure what i will be now the blowers gone : polo is good for up to 50mpg :
